Why do u have to sleep upright?
Hiya Girls
Just something bugging me.
My PS and nurse told me it is a must to sleep in an upright position and on my back for 10days or more after surgery.
Why is this? (i stupidly didnt ask the nurse)
I am a terrible sleeper at the best of times, and always sleep on my side, so having to sleep upright and on my back is going to be very difficult!!
If i sleep on my side what will this do?
Will it make my new boobs a funny shape?
I'm not bothered about the op or pain, i am more concerned about the sleeping issue.

Re: Why do u have to sleep upright?
Awww it's something so many of us find very uncomfortable sweetness, but it's needed to help the swelling subside and drain away naturally.
When you're told to sleep 'upright' this doesn't mean you have to sleep sitting up hun, as long as you keep your head and shoulders raised, that's all you need to do - You might find a V-Pillow helpful, it helps you to stop rolling onto your side and also makes sleeping on your back a lot more comfortable, I also found using a hot water bottle in the small of my back helped lots too as I found my back ached from sleeping in this position.
As the swelling subsides, you'll gradually get back to sleeping on your side hun, it'll only be for 10 days, more for some, depending on the amount of swelling they have. xx

Re: Why do u have to sleep upright?
Hi hun. I'm a stomach sleeper. So this is what bothered me about my BA. As I cannot sleep any other way.
But after my BA I couldn't even think of sleeping any other way. I'm now 8 days post op and still can't even bare to think of being on my side yet. I slept really badly first few nights I went to bed at 8pm and was up at 4am. Xxxx

Re: Why do u have to sleep upright?
Think i'm panicing incase i roll onto my side and damage my new boobs...
Didn't know it is to help with draining the swelling - that makes sence; thank you x
I had visions of me having to sleep sat upright in a chair or something - i'd find this impossible. I can't even sleep in a strange bed when i'm away from home never mind sat bolt upright.
I guess i'll just have to manage with a few hours ZZzzz for the first few weeks afterwards.....
Will deffinatly go shopping for a v-pillow! and will have to get a hot water bottle too xx

Re: Why do u have to sleep upright?
Ah the v pillow is amazing! My ps told me u don't have to be sat up as long as ur head shoulders and boobs are raised above everything else!
Honestly hun u won't even feel like rolling over. After the second night I was most comfy on my back.
I tried lying on my side yesterday but couldn't get comfy. (I've also got a full body pillow which is amazing)
I'm still lying on my back but with 1 normal pillow and my V pillow. Xxx
You'll be fine hun. Ur off work so its fine if u do wake up every few hours. Its not as uncomfy as I though it would be. Xxx

Re: Why do u have to sleep upright?
I don't think it would be possible to roll onto your side in your sleep without feeling some sort of discomfort and waking up from it. I'm now 12 days post Op and I still can't sleep on my side. It's not painful but I'd describe it as like you can feel the weight of the implants and the pressure of them leaning to the side and it just isn't very pleasant.
Though perhaps there are people who heal faster than me and are comfortable to do so by this stage. If so, I'm jealous. I miss sleeping on my side :(

Re: Why do u have to sleep upright?
I normally sleep curled up on my side and found sleeping upright really uncomfortable. I took some Tramadol before I slept to knock me out the first few nights. Slowly as time has gone on post BA, I've found myself slipping down from the mountain of pillows, and this morning I woke up and I was on my side and I slept quite comfortably. Your body will let you know if it doesn't like it!
Makes me laugh when I go on my side cos my boobs don't move AT ALL, they are still stuck there, totally immovable! lol x

Re: Why do u have to sleep upright?
I agree with flowergirl. Your body will let you know. I started waing up on my side. I did find that "morning boob" is less painful if you can sleep propped up.

Re: Why do u have to sleep upright?
I'm lucky I didn't suffer from morning boob.... I was a tad stiff in the mornings but I just made sure I sat up for a while and moved around quite a bit in the day.
My body and v pillow I got from argos- it was like £8 each. And it helps me sooooooooo much! Couldn't be without either pillows now xxxxx

Re: Why do u have to sleep upright?
Lol morning boob, is basically when all the blood rushes to your boobs, that's why its easier to sleep propped up steady flow of blood going to them whilst sleeping, I slept for a bit on my side last night then got paranoid that my boobs where guna fall out haha and then it was a little sore xx

Re: Why do u have to sleep upright?
Hey hun... I'm one day post-op and last night was my first night sleeping in an upright position (i'm so used to sleeping on my front - in my boobieless days!) so last night was a bit of a challenge and this morning my left bum cheek was in agony!
I'm off to buy a V Pillow today so hopefully will sleep more comfortable later... :)

V Pillow is fantastic and a pillow under the bum is a must too. It is soo uncomfortable for the first few days. Last night I was on my side with a V. It was really nice actually.

Re: Why do u have to sleep upright?
Ive been sleeping on my back my PS said it's fine. I don't have to sleep upright. But what's a V pillow? Is it those travel neck pillows? Or the ones you sleep with when One is pregnant?

Re: Why do u have to sleep upright?
Oh i was really worried about this aswel hun! I'm a terrible sleeper too. But i was completely fine. I didn't sleep completely up right, just a pillow under my shoulders. I don't know why but i slept like a complete baby for a week after my op! It was probably the GA. And after a week i was used to sleeping on my back so i'm sleeping fine :) Even now i can sleep on my side, i prefer sleeping on my back because i'm so used to it! xxx

Re: Why do u have to sleep upright?
I am still not comfy on my side.
MY SURGEON GAVE ME THE BEST ADVICE EVER: Sleep on the couch or in a recliner. I sleep on my couch with a couple cushions behind me, and then my pillow, so I don't feel propped up, just comfy against the cushions and I don't roll over onto them. PLUS it is WAY easier to get up in the morning, since you will not be able to use your arms to push yourself up in bed.
Hope that helps someone.

Re: Why do u have to sleep upright?
I have bad dreams when I sleep on my back :-( I remember it from my first op though and there is no way you could sleep on your front. Also not sure if you've had kids but the swelling feeling in the mornings is like when your milk comes in after having the baby (hot rocks I believe that's called) but as you get up and walk around you feel the relief as it drains away :-)
