Itchy sore left incision? Empty Itchy sore left incision?

Post by Jenz24 23rd March 2011, 9:32 pm

Hello

I havent had much trouble with pain but all along my left boob has been much more sore than my right. Today the pain in the left incision has been taking my breath away, its really hot, sore, stingy and itchy! I took my dressing off but couldnt see any fresh blood on the steri strips so put a new dressing on.

Any ideas? Im thinking of ringing the clinic tomorrow and nipping in for a check but my clinic is like miles away so would mean a 50min train journey, 15 minute walk (£12 for the train) and then the same back! so im kind of reluctant coz i also dont have the energy to do this!

Would love to know what you all think

Itchy sore left incision? Empty Re: Itchy sore left incision?

I remember the itching on the incisions extremely well - especially on day 4 and 5 (Xmas Day & Boxing Day), I now know why babies have scratch mitts, I nearly got some to stop myself gouging out the stitches with my nails. Have you tried loosening your bra in case the elastic at the bottom is rubbing on incision or some people find that cutting a panty liner in half and putting between bra and boob helps - I found that wearing a vest top with my bra over the top was a little better (no one can see if you put another t shirt over the top. I would ring the clinic to ask for advice - my hospital was shut for week in between Xmas & New year so I had to just sit on my hands and hope for the best (I did have my PS mobile number in case of a real emergency). Let us know what happens xx

Itchy sore left incision? Empty Re: Itchy sore left incision?

I've been having the same thing. I was going to start a new topic about this to find out if it was normal but seeing as you started so well, I thought I would add my concerns too.

I am 1 week post op. I haven't experienced any pain up until I had the dressings off and the stitches taken out on Monday. Since then the feeling has started coming back to the most part of my boobs, especially the nipples, and I realise now that it is actually very sore and painful, I just couldn't feel it before as I was totally numb. Maybe this is what is happening to you Jenz? The only part of my boob I can't feel is the underside, about 3 inches wide until just under my nipples. This is normal right? I should be feeling pain about now shouldn't I?

As for the left one hurting more, I have the same thing. It may be a silly suggestion but maybe it is because it is closer to your heart? I always read that people have more pain on the left side than the right.

Anyway, that's enough of a rant from me tonight. I hope this is all very normal and routine.

Itchy sore left incision? Empty Re: Itchy sore left incision?

Oh the itch was the worst part for me, drove me literally insane. A bag or frozen peas wrapped in a tea towel and put over them helped and so did some antihistamine tablets, luckily it didn't last very long. As for stinging in the incision area it's also fine and normal, warmth to the area is normal as you body has been through trauma, if it becomes very hot painful and swollen I would go to see your PS or nurse. Shooting pains in your breasts or incisions is also normal and can affect both or one at a time.

I think it's a pretty normal part of the healing process. If the scars look fine - no weeping or fresh blood then you shouldn't need to make the trip to the clinic. A call might be a good idea tho xx

My insicions aren't itchy but my left one aches and has a burning sensation.
My nurse phoned me yesterday and I asked her about this she said its completley normal.
I can't see my scars at all. I'm still completley wrapped up till tuesday :-) xxxx

Jenz24 - The itchiness is a normal part of your recovery sweetness, not pleasant, but it's nothing to be concerned about - You've had some good suggestions to help alleviate the pain such as cushioning the sore incision with a pantyliner and using ice packs to help ease through it.

Plinkablob & Chelles - The loss of sensation in areas of your breast is fine, it can take up to 1 year post-op for your breasts to regain full sensation so that's nothing to worry about.

Nipples being ultra sensative (ouchy, awful this one) is fine too, you may find using the round make-up pads to help cushion the nipple helps this, some [eople find using breasts feeding pads good too. xx

I take antihistamine too to relieve the itching. It drives me mad... usually in the late evening. I just rub around it, being careful not to touch the actual incision. It's got better since I had my dressings off though. Last night I had a shower for the first time and it helped too, so you'll be able to do this soon. I think all the sweatiness (yum) and rubbing of the bra doesn't help.

Hey, didn't realise I had any responses to this! Thanks for your advice, the pain seems to ease n then randomly come back but I'm startin to think it's normal. Did any one get really itchy in between your boobs where your bra sits? Driving me mad! X
