Advice on Hibiscrub please!
hi girls,
i've been advised by my surgeon to use hibiscrub before my op. On the instructions it says to use it the day before the op and to wash my hair in it too, which i will do. It then says to use it the day of the op too. So do you think i need to wash my hair again on the morning of the op?
I was planning to shower the night before my op and wash my hair and then have a quick shower on the morning of the op but not wash my hair again.
Also, does anyone know if it will be ok to use conditioner after using the hibiscrub on my hair? will be bad enough not wearing moisturiser or make up on the day of the op, let alone having hair like straw too! i would like a small bit of dignity left. :tears:
thanks!

I wouldn't have thought you'd have to re-wash your hair hun, I'm not sure about the conditioner though. Only some hospitals require that you wash with the hibiscrub anyway. x

Re: Advice on Hibiscrub please!
Hi hun,
I actually found that the hibiscrub did a really nice job on my hair!!! I was surprised and pleased. I didn't realise you were supposed to use it the night before (as I didn't bother to read the instructions until the day of my op), so I just used about half a bottle (lol) on the morning of my op.
I'm sure you'll be fine to wash your hair the night before with it, and then skip your hair on the day of your op.

Hi hun,
you can use Hibiscrub and then wash yourself with your normal shower gel/ shampoo / conditioner after, that's absolutely fine. Just had a mandatory update at work about it so it's all fresh in my head

Re: Advice on Hibiscrub please!
Hello all, I have a lot of experience using Hibiscrub at work. You need to shower and wash hair the night before surgery and again the morning before surgery - including a second hair wash. Do not use shampoo or conitioner or moisturisers as this deactivates the protection of the Hibiscrub. The reason for doing this is to remove all the bacteria etc living on the skin and in the hair. If bacteria that normally live on skin and in hair have access to a wound - it will cause infection. This is why it's important to do this properly. You are protecting yourself from getting an infection. The Hibiscrub also leaves an invisible layer of protection on the skin that stops the skin regrowing the bacteria and also stops you picking up bacteria from the hospital / clinic. You need the 2 showers as 2 showers have been shown to be the most effective. Hope that helps you all x

This info is so so useful. Do you use it on your face?? Oh and can you blow dry your after using it in op day In the morning before surgery or does the hairdryer/straighteners deactivate the hibiscrub too?? Any clarity would be great please??? Xxx

Re: Advice on Hibiscrub please!
Hello there! Yes, do use it on your face - avoiding eyes and ears - pay special attention to the nose as this is where a bacteria called Staph Aureus lives - it is this bacteria that causes most wound infections.
Yes, you can blow dry and straighten hair - no problem at all. For breast surgery - pay particular attention to washing the armpits and the area under the breast - the highest amount of bacteria is found in warm moist places on the body. Hope that helps! x

Re: Advice on Hibiscrub please!
Hi looby lou and welcome to the board.
Not really sure why my mandatory update said it was fine to advise patients to use their own shower gel / shampoo after using hibiscrub, perhaps it's different Trust policies (I'm guessing you work for the NHS?).
Anyway I can't find anything definitive on the internet, other than this link here click here
which is not my Trust but under the mrsa treatment it says it's fine to use your own shampoo after.
I guess it doesn't matter that much, but best to ask your clinic to clarify x

Re: Advice on Hibiscrub please!
I think it all depends on your clinic and PS too.
In the NHS (in my trust anyway)
There are strict guidelines about hibiscrub, if were using it on a patient it cant be used in conjunction with anything else, were not to rinse it off either just wash then dry (must be itchy).
All so confusing, I don't think I have to use hibiscrub before my op.

Re: Advice on Hibiscrub please!
I just used it alone the night before my op and on the day. Washed my body and hair. It actually made my hair feel quite soft! I didn't use any conditioner either xx

Re: Advice on Hibiscrub please!
hi girlies
I bought some hibiscrub at the wknd from tesco pharmacy & cost me £7.50. It says on the instructions not to wash with any normal soaps after using hibiscrub as it dilutes its strength.
