After BA: How soon can I drive and swim? Empty After BA: How soon can I drive and swim?

Post by flowergirl 28th February 2011, 3:53 pm

Hi girlies,
How soon after my BA can I drive? THG who is doing my BA, said one week but HMG said 2 weeks... how long have you been / were you advised? I really need to be able to take my son to school, it's only 10 mins each way, I should be ok after a week, shouldn't I?
Also, how soon after a BA can I go swimming? I'm off to Budapest 4 weeks after my BA and was planning on going in all the natural thermal spas... do you think this would be ok? I won't be wearing a sports bra in the spa obv, more like a sexy new bikini... will it ruin my new boobies? My stitches should be healed by then shouldn't they?
Thanks in advance!

from what i have read flowergirl, driving is ok after 1 week if you are driving an automatic and things that can be hard are the handbrake and parking etc. so just take it easy.

I don't drive an automatic... it's just a little journey there and back, trying to convince myself it'll be ok! Basically I HAVE to be able to get my son to school and back, so I'll HAVE to be better! xx

I drove after about 10days but it didn't feel right for a few days. You need to legally be able to do an emergency stop so bare that in mind.

As for swimming you will need to let your scars heal my clinic advised not to swim before 6weeks or I could risk infection. x

He's 5! I can't imagine letting him anywhere near the gear stick lol! I'm really short so really close to the steering wheel anyway with my seat pumped up to the max, I think I'll be ok, just can't whizz around like I normally do haha! Hysterical

I was with THG as well - I did do a short journey after 6 days and I had a long (400miles) trip on the 7th day. I found putting the car into reverse was the most difficult as I couldn't do it with one hand, I needed to use both hands - but that was OK as I was always stationary when I had to engage reverse. The other gear changes were OK'ish, just a twinge of pain now and again.
I was allowed to swim after my 4 week post op checkup after the incision was fully closed and the scar itself had shrivelled up and dropped off leaving just the pinkish line where the incision had been made. However, I can see that this might be different from person to person depending on how fast you heal.

HI hun, I drove on the 3/4th day I think, but it was only a short journey. It was ok - the worst bit changing gears, especially reverse and getting the flippin seatbelt on was a bit of a challenge to say the least.... Hysterical

Like Carol, as far as swimming was concerned I was told 6 weeks minumum to ensure my scar had healed completely, obviously we all heal at different rates, so bear that in mind hun. Your clinic will provide booklets on aftercare but if you're unsure of anything after your BA just ask the girls on here, you'll find them very helpful and more importantly, they have a wealth of experience. x

I was ok to drive after a week, although I did drive an auto. I drove my mums manual car and driving isn't the problem it's parking, turning and reverseing. So my advice, drive like a learner and feed the wheel. Two hands for reverse gear. Oh and bumps ha ha well you'll soon find out they are weird, just go slow over them. I was told no soaks in the bath and no swimming for 6 weeks until my scars were fully closed and sealed.

I didn't drive for 10 days and you shouldn't swim for at least 6 weeks. Remember you're paying a lot of money for your new assets so make sure you look after them :good: xx

Not sure about driving as I don't drive but I was told no swimming until my incisions had closed up. There is a risk of infection if your wound isn't totally closed. Ask your PS/nurse for their advice.
