Huge general anaesthetic fear
While any of have been under general anaesthetic have you heard anything that has been going on around you? Do you feel anything or do you dream of anything?
How scary do you find it??
P.S Who of you have had your BA by My Breast?

Re: Huge general anaesthetic fear
One minute I was laying on the bed in the operating theatre waiting to have my op... seemingly the next minute I was coming round in recovery. It all seemed to pass in an instant and I knew nothing of the operation. I didn't feel anything, wasn't aware of anything and I didn't have any dreams.
I didn't have my op through My Breast (I was MYA) but plenty of girls here have... sure they'll be along soon to reassure you.

Re: Huge general anaesthetic fear
I to was extremly scared of a ga,
i told them this before and they said it wouldent hurt at all and i would be fine, the worse part for me was going down to theatre,
when i was there he said he was going to but a tiny needle in my hand, when i looked across he had done it and i didint even feel it go in, totally surpised, then he said you will feel a cold sensation but he didint even get to finsh the sensation word and i had gone, the next i no i was snuggled into my duvet waking up slowley,
they are totally used to people being very nervous and no how to deal with them,

Re: Huge general anaesthetic fear
I was a little apprehensive about GA. I knew what being sedated was like & i liked that feeling so i assumed it would be similar & it was. Just as i was about to go off i told the anethatist...lol. I said...'Right i am off now' I told the nurse off who was trying to wake me as i was having a lovely dream with loads of bright colours with my babies face in the middle.....it was so so nice :-) x

Im also worried about aneasthetic ive never had it before, from some of the stories on here & from my friends ive never heard of anyone waking up, i think thats very very rare and only happens when the aneathesist (however u spell it) isnt very good as they should be monitering heartbeart etc to make sure you are still under Xx

Re: Huge general anaesthetic fear
GA is nothing to worry about, honestly. It is all over so quickly! The funny thing is that usually the staff are talking to you and then you just drift off mid-sentence in the middle of a conversation and then wake up what feels like minutes later! I didn't dream of anything or hear anything, it's just such a weird but nice experience. The only thing I felt was a tiny scratch when they put the needle in and then a cold feeling up my arm, I didn't hurt though. x

Re: Huge general anaesthetic fear
lt tIv heard it referred to as being switched off!! then they just switch u on again - amazing, anesthetists are sooo clever the thing to ensure u do is be completely upfront about everything they ask u all the time like how much u drink, if u smoke, if youve taken recreational drugs yeah it might be embarassing but that is how they work out how much drugs to use so if u lie they dont give u enough.
The scariest part for me was the needle HATE THEM was terrified ha ha the nurses were holding my hand and stroking my head going "aaaw" ha ha ha

I had a great experience. It is true, you fall asleep one second and the next your up! The people were so nice to me! I am terrified of needles so they used a gas mask first to put me asleep before they put the needle in! Great experience and you have nothing to worry about, they are VERY qualified.

Re: Huge general anaesthetic fear
I had my op through Mybreast hun and the staff were all fab!
I too was nervous about the GA, I think most people are, but it really isn't anything to worry about at all. All I remember is having the gas mask on (I'm pertrified of needles!) and then waking up in recovery, boobies and all! When under I definately did not know what was going on, was aware of nothing and didn't have a dream.
Anethetists are very good at what they do, mine was fantastic with me, I felt I was in very good hands and tbh it's all over so very quickly.
You will be fine hun, try and focus more on how happy you will be when you come round and see your for the last time, amazing!

Re: Huge general anaesthetic fear
I also had my op with MyBreast, and agree with FunkyGirl the staff were great.
I've had several GA's hun, and never felt a thing or woke up with any of them. Honestly you'll be fine. One minute you're on the bed having the needle put in....while this is going on there will be another member of the team chatting to you....the next minute you're waking up.
Please don't let the GA worry you hun. xx

Re: Huge general anaesthetic fear
I went with MyBreast and I had a good experience with my GA. I wasn't really fearful as I'd had GA when I was younger and my friend who is a nurse said fit and healthy people don't have any problems with GA. I knew I was gonna wake up when she said that!
I don't remember a thing after my anasthetist saying how expensive crossrail was going to be, I think I fell asleep mid conversation. It really is nothing to worry about hun, unless you have the main health hazards (heavy smoker/drinker, obese, diabetes etc) then your not in any immediate danger.
In the operating theatre your anasthetist monitors your vitals, sits by your head and makes sure you are asleep so you won't remember a thing. If anything goes wrong with your vital signs or you're not responding well, he will tell them to stop surgery. He/she is there to ensure you sleep and then wake up. Thats their job, so don't be scared hun xx

Re: Huge general anaesthetic fear
There is some great advice there, im absolutely petrified for some strange reason of having a GA.. not a clue why, i think its the sensation of it happening, the drifting away is what scares me.. after reading this im feeling a bit more relaxed about it..

Re: Huge general anaesthetic fear
Thanks, all this information is really helpful. I'm not sure why i have a fear of this, probably because i've not had one before. I've never had an op of any kind before.
To the girls who have replied who used My breast, what was the name of your surgeon and what is the aftercare like. I have emailed Simon Withey, has anyone used him?
