S. Hamilton or St. Johns & St. Lizzies ladies
I've had hardly any info from MyBreast on what I need apart from a 'compression garment' which wasn't very useful as I'm having 2 ops and don't know which it applies to.
I've asked numerous times and it doesn't seem easy to get a straight answer.
I asked when I was due to leave and was told 10am the next day even though I've paid to be a daycase!! I've decided to pack for the evening just in case.
Anyway my question for you girls is what time was you admitted and what time did you go down for surgery? Also...Were you wheeled to surgery or did you walk? Did Mr Hamilton come and check on you afterwards? Did you have a band fitted across your chest? Were you given any specfic pre-op instructions i.e. wash with antibacteral soap, no deodrant etc?
Its getting closer now and I feel really under prepared with very little info coming from MB. Any help you girls can give would be fab!!
Thanks girlies

Also I've been given no instructions on how long before the op to not eat and drink. I know the regular is 6 hours is this what you girls were told?
I sent an email to my PCC last week but still waiting for a reply and I know there will be a lot of back and forth. I'm just worried as I'm so close to my op date and I could be doing something that I'm not supposed to without knowing

Anyway my question for you girls is what time was you admitted and what time did you go down for surgery?
I was admitted at 7.00 am, went down to surgery about 10.30ish - can't really remember!
Also...Were you wheeled to surgery or did you walk?
Nope, walked down to THE LIFT, and then walked down a corridor which looked like some 1980s school building - then into the anaesthetist's room, hoiked myself up onto the trolley and let them do their stuff. Definitely the worst part of the whole experience
Did Mr Hamilton come and check on you afterwards?
Yes, once on the day and again the next morning (I was an overnight case)
Did you have a band fitted across your chest?
Yes, just like a huge piece of packing tape! Kept it on for two weeks I think ...
Were you given any specfic pre-op instructions i.e. wash with antibacteral soap, no deodrant etc?
They sent a little booklet about washing with antibacterial soap etc. But I think they've stopped sending that out now. I think I was told 12 hours no eating or drinking but I can't really remember now. Probably best to phone MB to double check.
Its getting closer now and I feel really under prepared with very little info coming from MB.
So disappointing to hear they're still weak in this area ... I think their admin people really just don't 'get' how important (and scary) this is for most people.
But you'll be fine BP - the hospital and the surgeon will take excellent care of you!
A xx

Re: S. Hamilton or St. Johns & St. Lizzies ladies
Thanks Annie! I'll definitely be taking a gown and slippers then.
I'm being admitted at 11am and probably won't go down until 1-2. I'm really worried that they've put me on a late admission and will still expect me to leave late that evening!
No food for 12 hours? eeek I might just collapse! I was going to get up at 5 have a slice of toast and a banana but to keep me going. i really need to find out how long before I can't eat.
I'm trying not to stress but the lack of information is making me feel really unprepared and overwhelmed with things I have to try and remember. If I wasn't a member of this forum I'd have been none the wiser! I think I will give them a call tomorrow if I don't get an email back

Re: S. Hamilton or St. Johns & St. Lizzies ladies
Yeah, probably just phone them - they never once answered any email that I sent them!
The hospital provided a nightgown and slippers so you probably don't need to take your own - I suppose you could give the ward at J and L's a ring to double check? I think I was in St Francis, it should say on your admission letter.
It'll fly by now BP - you'll have an excellent experience on the day I'm sure!

Compression garment definately applies to boobs, sports bra is fine as most use those, i had my marena compression braBoobiePrize wrote:I've had hardly any info from MyBreast on what I need apart from a 'compression garment' which wasn't very useful as I'm having 2 ops and don't know which it applies to.

Well if you get a free nights stay thats great so dontsay anything! lol if you arent feeling well enough to go home as a daycase, SH will always say to stay which is fab, rather than been carted out like some other companies.I asked when I was due to leave and was told 10am the next day even though I've paid to be a daycase!! I've decided to pack for the evening just in case.
First op i was admitted at 11.00am, went down at 3pm as i was last. 2nd op admitted at 7am, went down at 9am which was good.Anyway my question for you girls is what time was you admitted and what time did you go down for surgery? No you walk to surgery with a nurse, down the lift and into a room where they hook you up to moniters and then you're put under, everyone is so nice you'll be fine. No band across chest. SH always comes and checks on you very soon after if he can, he saw me twice before i left. Pre op i had a leaflet which said no food/water 6 hours before, no make up/deo/nail varnish - basically wash with anti bac soap in the morning and dont put anything on after you get out of the bath.[/quote]
I wasnt told the ward on my admission letter for any ops, i just went to the desk and then someone comes and gets you, its a fab service once you're there, v well looked afterBoobiePrize wrote:Annie66 wrote: I think I was in St Francis, it should say on your admission letter.

Re: S. Hamilton or St. Johns & St. Lizzies ladies
Hey Hunni
My admission time was 11:30, and my op was due to be done at 2:00 pm. I was allowed to have breakfast before 7:00 am, so I got up to have some toast, and my last drink was I think before 11:30, as long as it was a clear drink, like water or squash.
It was gone 4:00 pm when I eventually went down. They will check when you last ate, so I think before 7:00 am will be fine, and I made sure I had quite a lot of water up until 9:30, else I'd have been sooo thirsty.
Good Luck, darling. xxxx

Re: S. Hamilton or St. Johns & St. Lizzies ladies
Hi,
I stayed at your hospital and it is lovely.....the pre-op instructions re eating and drinking were in one of my letters........I think the confirmation of booking letter???
When you arrive at the hospital you are asked to take a seat in the small reception area (for only seconds really), someone from admissions shows you to your room (I was on an orthopaedics ward), they give you some basic info and then member of the nursing staff will comes along and introduce themselves as your nurse....it is very welcoming and caring in there. I had a pleasant stay and wouldn't hesitate in returning.
You do walk down to theatre (involving a lift as some have said). The anesthetic room and theatres are in the basement of the hospital....I was cold and shivering but I think this was nerves! All staff I met in the anesthetic room and afterwards were delightfull...
Good luck xxxxxxxxx

Re: S. Hamilton or St. Johns & St. Lizzies ladies
Ditto everything that the girls have said. MB might be a bit rubbish at their admin but this is absolutely no reflection on the hospital. From the minute you arrive you are taken care of. I had early admission times for both my ops and was first on the list (can't remember exact times). Nurse introduces herself and takes/checks all your info and measures you for compression stockings. I had a quick shower and took my make up off and changed into the robe and lovely paper knickers then she came back with my stockings. You can imagine by this time you are looking absolutely gorgeous
Had a visit from my ps who drew on me, then the anaesthetist came up for a chat then within minutes I was taken down in the lift to theatre. When I had my second op I was in the anaesthetists room for a while with a lovely nurse who told me that they wash the area with iodine before they operate anyway so there's no need to wash with anything special before hand.
Oh also (very importantly!) before you go down you have to fill in a menu card to let them know what you want for your dinner. First time I ordered sandwiches as I didn't think I'd be hungry but second time I had full meal which was gorgeous.
I was discharged the next day about 10/11ish. If you're supposed to be a day case and they keep you overnight you've had a result and I wouldn't worry too much. Can't see they can ask for more money now. My ps visited me first thing to see how I was (again you're not looking your best at this point!) oh and he also visited me the previous evening too when I was high as a kite on morphine. Anaesthetist visits, gives you your meds and then thats it you're free to go.
Don't worry about a thing hun. You have more than enough info from us girls here. We all know that MB can be a bit rubbish in the admin department but they still have some of the best surgeons and possibly the best aftercare policy of all the "high street" companies out there.
Good luck gorgeous. Not long now and you'll be on the other side! xxxxx

Ah girlies you're all so wonderfully. I'm really reassured now. I phoned up and got an email with pre-op and post-op instructions, they had apparently forgot to include this in my confirmation letter!
I had no reason to fret really but being so close I started to panic a little.
I can't wait! If all you girls have said about the hospital is true I'll be just fine! Only 3 more sleeps!!

Re: S. Hamilton or St. Johns & St. Lizzies ladies
Wow girl, only 3 days to go! So exciting.
There sisn't much I can add really.
The hospital staff is wonderful and you'll be treated like a queen, believe me.
MB can still be rubbish with their admin but you gotta keep on pushing them.
I was lucky that all my admin was directly dealt with my ps' clinic and his wonderful assistant. SO I knew exactly what to do and get prior op day.
Not long to go, babe xx
