Re: Just got some bad news from my PS
cookie wrote:So sorry to hear this Lynnie. It isn't due to the drains that you need an overnight stay hun, plenty of girls have drains and have day cases but if you're a known risk of complications post-op you will be required to have an overnight stay hunni. I know it's a lot more money for you, but when you weight that up against your health and the care you'll recieve after your surgery, it's cheap at the price for peace of mind IMO. Good luck sweetheart.
Thanks Cookie, yeah you're right. I've just been getting so excited and it felt like a big blow. I can't back out now and like I said before, I would have rather stayed overnight anyway. xx

Understandably it was a blow for you hun But with that positive attitude you have, you'll get through this! xxx

yeh yours are higher than mine, mine were 85 the week before i had my op on my last blood test results, which 85 is good, so 92 is far better, i dont know why they want you to defintly have a transfusion tho, but i guess they are just being safe rather than sorry.
transfusion does sound scary! and i was told i would prob have to have one, but somehow in the end i didnt, but i did talk to a nurse and she said do not worry about the transfusion, its very safe, so youll be fine, plus i spent most time worrying about bleeding to death in the run up to my op,that i mite aswell of just had the transfusion as it would of saved me alot of worry x
so whats next, are you under a heamotolgist?? xx
I'm so glad I mentioned it to the PS now at my first consultation. I might not have done if I hadn't read your posts. I should be grateful that I've not just found out the night before!
I know what you mean about being scared of bleeding to death! I nearly have to have a c section with my first baby and was convinced they wouldn't be able to stop the bleeding! As it was, there was no problem at all.
Is it just me or is it a horrible thought that you'd be given someone else's platelets or blood?
I've got to tell my PS tomorrow what I want to do and she's going to have a word with the haematologist. I think I'm just going to have to put my fears aside and go for it. It's gotta be worth it surely?

Re: Just got some bad news from my PS
well it can be sorted so stay positive x
if youve had a normal birth with no major bleed then thats a really good sighn too, plus you can have low platelets, but the platelets that you do have can clot really well, so have you had a clotting test done too??
yes its a gross thort of been given someone elses blood, lol, you dont know where it come from, ha ha, but just try really hard not to think like that, and think of it as a good thing, its going to help you x
its defintly worth it hun, i really hope you manage to sort it out, let me no how you get on?? xx

Re: Just got some bad news from my PS
Oh poor you!! Just a bit of support and positivity for you on the platelet transfusion - my 2nd daughter had one and was absolutley fine. Goes in through a normal cannula etc.
The last thing you want is to bleed badly, it will really affect your healing at the very least. At 92 your platelet count is quite low, normally should be between 150 to 400, the risk of increaded bleeding comes in between 80 to 100 so you are midway-ish in that range I think that you should be inspired with confidence that they are being this careful with you!! Not very helpful, convenient or cheap for you though so I do sympathise!
One last thing, are you due to have a period because your platelet levels can dip at this time?
Hope you do find the extra money though, good luck x

Re: Just got some bad news from my PS
Some great advice from the girls here.
I would consult with a specialist in this case, they may be able to suggest ways of raising your count or there could be other options that wouldn't mean you have to have the transfusion. Anything to lesser complications would be best.

Awwww Lynnie just read your post hun, I'm so sorry to hear this, I know how excited you have been. The girls have given some great advice, I would try and seek advice from your GP and see what they say hun, also do some haggling on price, you never know what happens!
It's a minor setback hun but I think if you can get the price down a little, companies are generally open to negotiate. Good luck and let us know how you get on.
Sending you big hugs x x

Re: Just got some bad news from my PS
Thanks everyone
I've got 'til Friday to decide what I want to do. I've basically been told that the fixed price is FIXED, pretty much the same as Mybreast then. It'll be £4962 so will just have to try and find the extra money. 4 grand sounded a lot but that's virtually 5 grand and it's making me ask myself how I can justify that!
I don't think I can get this far and start over though, or try and convince myself that I'm happy as I am. I took some photos the other day and was disappointed to see that my boobs look worse than I thought they did!
I really appreciate all your support girls xxx

Sorry to hear this doll, I hope you get it sorted and manage to get your BA x
Re: Just got some bad news from my PS
Thanks girls. My OH is working overtime all day on Friday to put some money towards it, lol.
Latest is that the haematologist has told my PS that my platelets aren't low enough to have to be given a transfusion so that's good news The only time I'd need one would be if something went wrong.
Unfortunately she didn't follow the news with 'you won't have to stay the night'. Something else her secretary said that alarmed me a bit was that it would cost more if I ended up having an emergency transfusion. Surely fixed price includes everything if things go wrong, shouldn't it?!

Re: Just got some bad news from my PS
well i wonderd that aswell, but my mum said she thinks thatif something was to of gone wrong, and i needed additional care/tests etc, i would have to pay that on top of the fixed price fee, but i think given that your platelets are still satisfactory and wont need the transfusion then i think thats a good sign and altho they are still low, they arnt terribly low.i wonder why you wasnt put under a heamotolgist by ure gp, to monitor your blood tests in the run up to ure ba?? as i after 5 months of being under a heamotolgist i finally got the go ahead by her to have my surgery, and by my gp, who is also a heamotolgist.it just felt like i had proof to give my surgeon that i was fit for surgery.

Re: Just got some bad news from my PS
I guess if the emergency occurred during the op with no pre-existing evidence that it was likely to happen, then you would be covered?? Kinda like insurance, pre-existing conditions etc are always excluded.Lynnie wrote:Thanks girls. My OH is working overtime all day on Friday to put some money towards it, lol.

Unfortunately the risk for bleeding isn't over once the op is, especially if you don't need to have a platelet transfusion, so I would assume that they are not going to change their minds on the overnight stay.
I would see if you could get a reduction on their charge for overnight though, £800 is waaaaay too much!! You could have suite in a London Boutique Hotel with naked Swedish(man!!) 30 year old ( showing my age...any younger than 30 would be yuk!!) feeding you grapes during recovery for that.
Seriously though, I realy feel for you, just try and relax and try and think what will be will be. All the things in my life I've really had to try for I've enjoyed much more and for far longer than those that came easy.

Erm, I haven't even told my GP about having a BA! Did I ought to be going to see him?
Do you know the reason for your low platelets? A haemotologist looked at my blood tests when I had my baby and he said that I have ITP - Idiopathic Thrombocytapenia Purpura. Idiopathic meaning that they haven't got a clue what's causing it! Because it's never caused me a problem it's just been left that I've got it and that's that.

Thanks kayla. Looks like you're right! I just phoned Spire and they said that a blood transfusion is not included in the fixed price and if my PS thinks I may need one then she should get in touch with them so they can quote a price. It already stands at £4926 and I think a transfusion will cost a couple of hundred at least!
Wow, I really like the idea of the London Boutique Hotel and naked Swedish Man feeding me grapes! Age 30 would be just right, my OH is 44 so 30 would be GREAT! They won't budge on price unfortunately
You're right though about the things you try longer for being more enjoyable than things that come easy. I'm just starting to wonder if I'm putting myself in unnecessary risk! When people start talking transfusions it's scary!

Re: Just got some bad news from my PS
well i think it would be better if you told your gp, as they may be able to help you, by writing a note to say your ok for the op, and pass you onto a heamotolgist where you can have regular blood tests and if your platelets stay at a reasonable level, you will get medical clearence to say your ok for surgery.i have heard of itp before, but mine low platelets are because the blood flow around my liver is gushing out the portal vein, as apposed to flowing ,causing the platelets to be shunted to my spleen and hidden.weird?? no one knows why this is happening but i take tablets everyday to control/slow down the blood flow. xx

Re: Just got some bad news from my PS
oooh right, never heard of that before. It's a good job you found out about that then.
I'm waiting to hear from my PS's secretary today to confirm the definite price and how much a transfusion would cost. It's good to know that you had no problems though and my levels aren't as low as yours were.
I can't believe 3 weeks has gone by since you got your new boobs! Hope you are healing well x
