How long realistically before I can pick up baby??
Hi ladies, I'm hoping to have my BA first 2 weeks in April, my baby will be 6 months old then ( I also have a 5 year old) how long before I can pick baby up? Change nappies? Etc? I'm particularly worried about getting him in and out if his cot as the sides don't drop down or lower !! :( xx

Picking up for at least a week, and when you do finally pick him up it's all in the tecnique, hold him as close to your chest as possible, arms in and elbows close to your side that way your not putting any pressure on your chest.
Do you have help at home Hun? Partner/sister/mum?
You will need help at least for a week with the baby Hun 2 If possible.

Hi girls , I can arrange for hubby to have a week off but didn't really want longer than that as he's self employed so doesn't get paid ! And I'm on maternity leave zx

Hubs will definatly need a week off with you. After that maybe have a sister or mum pop round for a few days after during the day if that's possible just whilst he's at work?

Just to help with the baby and to keep you company, make you tea etc! X

Hi, honey!! I'd say the others girls are correct.. I personally couldn't lift my neice who is 1.5 years old for about 3 weeks. Obviously a 6 month old will weigh less so you may get away with 1-2 weeks. Every case is different, honey, so you'll really have to see how you are and what your upper body strength is like. The most important thing is to know your limits and definitely not push yourself before you're ready!
I hope you're okay, honey xxxx

I could barely lift myself up let alone fill a kettle . Thankfully it was short lived but I'd imagine 2 weeks sounds about right .

I can't even hug my kids at the moment. I can get my 4 year old socks on for her and stuff as long as.she promises to stay still.
Having issues with car doors, sitting up etc
But saying that I saw a patient at clinic who was post op 8 days and she was carrying her child around.

I'd definitely wait around 2 weeks, babe. Like Tiger said - know your limits without pushing your self!! Xx

Re: How long realistically before I can pick up baby??
I lift my two year old boy. Managed it at 5/6 days post op.
Wouldn't dare lift my 6yr old haha.
I'm back to normal routine now. Did my first food shopping yesterday and such. Still have to take it easy as you get sore easily. Just be careful and do what your body tells you. If it's too much don't do it.
I haven't been on painkillers in two days and feel great. Haven't had very much pain from my boobs at all. Just discomfort and pain from my bra being too tight which it not isn't :) just take your time. As the girls said above it's recommended 2/3 weeks but in my opinion it's just not realistic at all. But everyone is different. You could be in agony and might need those weeks. You just have to wait and see. Xxx

Re: How long realistically before I can pick up baby??
the only thing I will say is that you need to go with YOUR surgeons suggestions if you have complications they will know if its been down to lifting etc and it will void the after care
it doesnt matter how great you feel or if you have pain or not its all down to the internal healing etc

It's hard not being able to do what u would normally would do for yourchild. But it's not forever and avoid chance for daddy to be main carer, well that's my experience anyway.
