anyone flew home themselves after surgery
hi all
Im sure that I read on here when I first had my BA that someone flew, (from Ireland Im sure) to her surgery and back again on here own.
I wondering whether to book a return flight and if I felt up to it fly home as Im really not liking the idea of the 4 hour car journey home, if I felt that I wasnt up to it then Peter could just drive down and get me in the end.
part of me is saying do it the other saying dont be silly lol
Last time I could have managed it no bother
I would literally take the clothes I was coming home in and wear their gown etc so coming home I would have my phone, passport, purse and kindle
xx

Re: anyone flew home themselves after surgery
I'd discuss the risk of DVT when flying right after surgery before booking anything Tink.
General guidelines for short haul flights are 2 weeks
The latest information from the NHS for chest surgery is 10 days after surgery.
See HERE xx

Its not a 'theory' babe. Its fact. This is why I suggested you speak with your surgeon before booking. X
Re: anyone flew home themselves after surgery
I think it's a big risk to take tink, especially of you're on your own.
The waiting around, being amongst so many other people, not being able to walk fast I shuffled around for a week after!
Knowing how rough you an feel after a ga with painkillers, feeling faint or dizzy and sick.
My car journey home was around 2hours and I know it's double, but at least you can stop and pull over if you feel funny have your other half there if you need him and no risk of being bumped into. Maybe split the journey into 2halves 2 hour drive, stop grab a bite to eat, fresh air then the next 2hours.
Me personally I couldn't even contemplate a flight home straight after surgery especially on my own. Knowing how I felt after every one of my surgerys x
Hope you work out a solution tink x

Re: anyone flew home themselves after surgery
hi hun,
my car journey home (by the hospital driver) was a bit over 1h i think and i was glad when it was over.. i found it a bit hard work to be honest, because i was tired.. on the other hand i didnt need to think about anything which has something to say for it as well!
in terms of dvt, yes discuss it with your surgeon but for me 'personally' and this is not a medical opinion at all, this would be my least worry. dvt while flying is more about sitting still in one position for a longer period of time, than the actual act of flying i believe. so a 4h car journey wouldn't necessarily be any better i would hav thought.
what about if your hubbie came to pick you up with a fligt down and a flight back with you, would that be an option?
in any case if you decide to fly, be smart about how you book, for example not a low cost carrier if you can, or if you do, i would suggest paying extra for a reserved seat and speedy boarding or something, so you're not in the jostling crowd, and also it makes the whole experience so much less stressful.
thats just my twopence worth xx

Re: anyone flew home themselves after surgery
yeah peter has said if I do fly, still need to see surgeon, and see if he thinks it ok to fly, then the only way im doing it is if he comes down and gets the flight home with me
Im terrible in the car at the best of times and the 40 min drive from Glasgow last time was almost unbearable.
Now i have my date I really am beginning to worry and stress about things now xx

If flyings a no no have you considered the train home, you can book a seat in advance not as quick as a flight but a smoother journey than car.xxx

I would go for train too, everything I've looked at has suggested 6weeks before flying after chest surgery....Well everything uk anyway. Better to be safe, alot of other people's stories I have read and researched have had long journeys home in the car and actually managed fine, particularly a YouTube blogger I watched said she thought the 3hour journey home she had to do would be bad and it was actually fine. I'd speak to the surgeon and ask if he would recommend it xxx

Yeah if i hadnt had a BA before id think a car journey wld be easy but ive had a 40 min car journey before and it was awful lol so even thinking about 4 hours is just crap haha
i will look into the train as I know the train from Manchester Airport goes straight to Glasgow Central xx

Re: anyone flew home themselves after surgery
although this suggestion is ideal, have u thought about staying in a hotel for a few days after as a compromise? that way if it is 10 days before u should fly then maybe you could meet it halfway and stay in a nice hotel for the initial recovery then fly back when hopefully the GA will have started to leave your system and you've got ove the initial shock of the boobs! goldilockz on here stayed in a hotel for about a week after i believe, i know it would cost a bit for a nice hotel and its not the same as being at home but it might make things easier for your return journey :) xx

Re: anyone flew home themselves after surgery
When you drove, did you have any extra cushioning? I had a 2.5hr drive home, and put a bit fluffy pillow on my chest and lay back a bit so the seatbelt was no where near them, and it was fine, even with my hubbys stupid car! I know some girls have flown right after V short haul, but I wouldnt have thought it'd be reccommended.

Re: anyone flew home themselves after surgery
when u put it thast way i think i'd be tempted to fly home! 45 mins doesnt seem that bad as you are literally up and down but i would check with surgeon and gp first and maybe invest in some good compression stockings to help the blood flow. also, book your seats to ensure plenty of room and that you wont end up next to some random who may nudge and elbow you! xx
