Full of q's today- Driving?!
The guidance I was given advises me to wait 1 week. My hubby is a stickler for sticking to things so won't let me- just out of curiosity when did you all start to drive again? How do you know if your ready? xx

Everyone manages to drive at different times from what ive seen but have difficulty eg 5th gear and reverse... maybe it would be a good idea to have a practise first before going anywhere because you may not be able to do it anyway! If you are up to it you don't want to go too far ild guess :) xx

Priority would be to check your insurance babe and that's its OK for you to drive now.
Some insurers have a period specified that you will be uninsured for after surgery.
Secondly, its illegal to drive if you don't feel capable of doing an emergency stop. So if you feel you need to still have a big pillow between you and the seatbelt its probably best to wait a little while.
Lastly... When YOU feel OK, its fine to drive. That's generally after about a week which is the turning point for many lovely. Just listen to your own body and be guided by that. Xx

I drove around day 7, but didn't feel comfy so I waited a while longer. 5th and reverse I struggled with for a while x

I waited 3 wks and was still tentative then. I'm still using my right hand to put it in reverse.

I drove after 6 days but i have an automatic at the moment. It was sore especially on roundabouts and i had one hand on the wheel and the other holding the seatbelt off my boobs so lucky i didn't have gears to contend with!

I drove after day 8 and felt fine. Going over bumps was a bit of a pain and 5th and reverse but other than that it was fine xx

Well I drove today just took it easy! Used hubby's car as its a bit smoother! Main difficulty was handbrake do just took it gentle and trying to lean out of the window to get a ticket from the machine from the car park! Hubby's off for a couple of days so will be driving and I will give it another go see how I get on. Main thing was I did feel safe. X

That's great u have driven now Charlie, I think I'll try next week, just do a really short trip. Yesterday I didn't have cuddly toys wedged behind the seat belt for the first time so thinking I must be feeling better.
Hope u enjoyed ur meal out? Xxx

Re: Full of q's today- Driving?!
I had to do a long drive not long post op, even my nurse was against it. I drove an automatic so no gear shifting etc, felt terrible for a couple of days after, was too much. I did have to drive down some country bumpy lanes which didn't help, and I remember feeling panicky in case I had to stop quick and I hurt my boobs. So just do quick drives in my opinion and take it steady. I was tired so I didn't feel like I was concentrating that well either! Had a super migraine afterwards, and could've kicked myself

I was told not to drive for two weeks - so will be driving to my two week checkup as my first journey.

I drove my car today on a very short trip and it was completely fine. Nurse said to me at post op just drive when you feel able - and obviously when you can do an emergency stop. She said you may be fine after a few days. I'm so taped up and "in place" anyway which is great. I'm not in any pain at all and had stayed in bed for 3 days for healing. I had no problems getting into gears at all - i'm very cautious of twisting my body in any way with the wounds - so took it very easy. Every body's different I guess :)
