Dreading the GA!
Well my revision is looming and I cant wait but I am dreading the GA. I cope with it fine but last time as I was going off my throat felt like it was closing up and I couldnt catch a breath. I know that this is what happens when you have a GA as you cant breathe for yourself as the body is paralysed but I could tell that was happening before I went off and it was horrible. Anyone else had this? I also had my throat scratched with the tube which gave me the worst sore throat ever and my cannula tissued and I had a superficial phlebitis for 4 weeks!! Sorry I am just wingeing but I am dreading all this again!

Re: Dreading the GA!
If you explain to the anaesthetist exactly what happened last time you have surgery they have all sorts of tricks up their sleeves, so I'm told by an anaesthetist lol to help you get the best from your surgery hun and ensure your comfort and saftey.
The phlebitis... Ouch! I had this too, infact its something I always seem to get whenever I have to have canulas, but unfortunately its not something that can be predicted so its a possibility it might happen again.
I was told to massage mine (it was a huge lump) and although it was sore it did settle down hun.
You're gonna be OK gorgeous, just stay focused on that end result. Xx

Thanks girls, I will speak to the anaesthetist about it. The surgery doesnt scare me at all its just the anaesthetic, thought of it makes me

Re: Dreading the GA!
You really shouldn't start to feel the paralysing agent! Surely they should give the analgesia and the propofol first! My anaesthetist was great! He gave me alfentanyl first, then the propofol, it was a lovely feeling!
Ask what method of airway protection they use as well. They didn't intubate me with an ET tube but used an LMA which just sits over the top of your trachea so isn't as invasive. I had no sore throat at all!
Newboobs, the paralysing agent is used so the patient is able to be intubated (breathing tube in your throat) and they can control your breathing while your asleep otherwise you'd be fighting against it!

Re: Dreading the GA!
GA scare the living day lights out of me.. I have seriously violent reactions when I wake up.. But I had a long chat this time and they used very old school GA on me and I was totally fine.. Even woke up easily which doesn't normally happen and no projectile vomit!!
Explain about your throat, they just have to be more careful, because I lost my front teeth when I was a kid they have to be careful they don't chip them now.. I've not had a sore throat so assume its because they take the tube out slower xx

Re: Dreading the GA!
No wonder you are dreading the GA bit. I had a GA a few years ago when I had my tonsils out and I can remember them giving me an injection with put me to sleep. It was weird because I could feel the stuff travelling through my body and as it worked its way up my chest towards my neck/head I can clearly remember saying "oh my god" and I was instantly asleep. They must have paralysed me after putting me to sleep. I don't remember anything else until I woke up in the recovery room, the first thing I said to the nurse was to remind her that I was supposed to have a suppository for the pain (I was 21). She said "you've already had it love". I was horrified lol.
Tell the anaesthetist what happened the last time so they can make sure it doesn't happen again. Maybe they need to give you a little bit more of the drugs than they did the last time x

So strange isn't it!! Ughh when you feel it run through your body! I woke up saying "is it over now, is it all done, are you sure". The recovery nurse (a man) was lovely though, he said I was chatting non stop about britain's got talent and the girl and dog act on there.. x

Re: Dreading the GA!
I've never had a GA but obviously know that it is to be expected when having a BA but doesn't stop it from scaring me!! Hopefully I'll be too excited about new boobs that I won't worry about it!
Good luck girls :-) xx
