Question about incisions Empty Question about incisions

Post by Mssaprl9 12th August 2012, 2:50 am

Did any of you keep your incisions constantly covered during the healing process? I ask because my Ps removed my stitches at the 1 week post op visit. He then put on new steri strips and told me to just take them off after 1 week. So being paranoid me, I haven't taken them off yet. Do you think it's ok to just leave them uncovered? I mean I think he would have told me if they needed to stay covered?

Ooohh... would love to know the answer as well! Just got my stitches removed yesterday and I don't think the steri-strips will last longer than a week! Just like Mssaprl9, I will be too paranoid about them being uncovered!

Question about incisions Empty Re: Question about incisions

Post by roxanne 12th August 2012, 8:11 am

The steri strips will eventually loose their adhesiveness and be easier to remove. If I were you I would ask your surgeon to make sure since different surgeons do things differently. My surgeon recommended I wear them for a few months (though at two months I swithed to micropore which is cheaper). My routine, based on my surgeon's suggestion, was to rub silicone gel to the scars and cover them with tape. I'm almost 4 1/2 months and have now eased off on the tape, but still applying silicone gel. I would give your surgeon a call tomorrow to know what he'd like you to do xxx

As roxanne says all surgeons offer different advice. I was given 2 rolls of the tape and told to change it every 3/4 days for the first 6 weeks. Past six weeks I was just to stop wearing them when i'm in sports bras, but put them on the first few times i'm wearing underwires as a bit of extra comfort.

Follow YOUR surgeons advice sweetie. Nobody elses matters because your advice is based on YOUR healing.

After my 1st BA I was told to remove my steri-strips a week after having the dressings removed too and I have pictures of my scars on here somewhere where you can clearly see my scars had faded to a small light fine line, so don't worry hun. You're obviously healing well, so if your surgeon said take 'em off, then there's no reason at all why you shouldn't hun, your scars will be just fine.

You may find it easier removing them in the shower after they're wet, they peel off much easier then. xx

Hmmm, my incisions were covered in tape for a week then my surgeon took them off and told me to use scar cream and nipple pads. I've been so paranoid they'll open up without the tape but so far so good Question about incisions 4239681551

So they must be closed enough so that nothing can get in them?

Not at all babe, you may still have small openings but they'll heal themselves, don't worry about it. Just don't use any lotions or oils on them because right now they're still prone to infection, but that applies also to anybody with dressings on or not. If your surgeon has requested you remove the steri-strips now, then really sweetheart, your surgeon will have assessed the scars and will have felt they're healing well enough not to have the strips on anymore, so you really will be fine now to take them off. Question about incisions Empty Re: Question about incisions

Post by Abbie_lovey 12th August 2012, 9:16 pm

I'm sure he would have told you to recover them if he thought they needed more time...he's the expert after all!
I had full dressings on for a week, then had them removed by the clinic nurse and swapped to steristrips for a week, then my surgeon told me to do away with those and just use micropore tape...but that started to irritate me and leave like heat rash type bumps where it had been stuck on...so when I saw the nurse at just under 5 week postop she told me I could leave them uncovered as the micropore was doing more harm than good!

I know what you mean about being paranoid to have them uncovered, still scared they will just fall out if I overreach or something haha! Because a dressing would have held them in place so well... Blush xxx

Question about incisions Empty Re: Question about incisions

Post by mildura 12th August 2012, 10:39 pm

I'm terrible with blood so i didn't look when the surgeon took the tape off and cleaned them. The tape had loads of blood underneath so i'd spent a week worrying i had still been bleeding. I finally got the courage to sneak a peak a few hours later and there was nothing, i honestly couldn't find the incisions Question about incisions 267328
I don't know how he closed them and i should be really happy but i think i worry more about them because i can't see what's holding them together. I keep looking down after every twinge just to make sure everything is still intact.
By the sounds of it everyone seems to worry their stitches will open but the good part is at least now you can see them! My biggest fear is necrosis because i'm a smoker, so i feel much better being able to see what's going on.
