Scared to shower
I am 4 days post op and my surgeon gave me the clear to shower yesterday. Should I not wash the incisions and try to keep them as dry as possible? I am scared, I don't want to cause any kind of infection. Any advice? What was your experience like when you first showered after your BA?

Re: Scared to shower
Are your incisions covered hun? Like with steri strips?
All I was advised was not to rub and not to use shower gel near the incisions. I didn't have a problem when I first showered but I was quite lucky in general with pain. Good luck

They are covered with steri strips, but there is also gauze on top of them. I will have to remove the gauze to shower. But then I'm wondering if I should replace it. I was not told what to do.

Re: Scared to shower
If you're confused it's probably best to give your surgeon/pcc a call as all us girlies all get given different advice from different surgeons. Better to be safe than sorry, especially if you're worried!
Re: Scared to shower
I was told not to shower the first week, then I had my dressing removed after my first check up and was given the all clear. I agree with mariaelaina, call your clinic or ps since they all five their own advice xxx

Re: Scared to shower
I went for my check up 10 days post op and was told I could shower and wash breast/incisions with fragrance free shower gel and didn't have any steri strips on them at all so as you can see everyone gets different advice definately best to check with your own clinic or ps xx

I know I should call, but it's Saturday and they are not open till Monday. I'd rather not wait that long to shower. I should have asked at my post op appointment but I was so drugged up on meds that I didn't even think about it! Stupid me! :(

Re: Scared to shower
I wasn't allowed to take my surgical bra off for the first week so couldn't shower properly but was advised either to shower just my lower half (if you have a shower that detaches from the wall) or flannel wash. Could you get by just doing that until monday? That way your boobs wouldn't even have to get wet. Just a thought!
Re: Scared to shower
I will say though if your still taking meds for the pain definately have your back to the shower or it won't be pleasant lol xx

Or maybe I could wrap cellophane around my boobs so they don't get wet...LOL

Re: Scared to shower
Maybe work around them until you call the clinic on Monday, just dip your head over and wash your hair that way keeping your boobs clear of any water. Then wash/rinse around your incicions. Alternatively have a very shallow bath and do the same if that's a little easier but do keep your incisions well and truest dry because bath water isn't very clean and could risk infection.
I'd still wait to speak to your clinic just to be on the safe side, Monday isn't far away :) x

Also, when I took off the bra to take a peek, there was dark dried blood under the steri strips...is this normal too??

Re: Scared to shower
Yeah that's normal providing its just a little bit, if it was continuing to bleed it would be worth checking out but as its dried you neeedent worry x

Re: Scared to shower
Usually with a shower you just let the water run over your breasts and not give the scars a rub.
Re: Scared to shower
As with many things, surgeons give a lot of differing advice to each other, which can get quite confusing when you're reading that of many other women on here, so just always follow the advice given by YOUR surgeon sweetheart and if you've been told you can shower by your surgeon at 4 days post-op. Then it's fine babe.
This was what I was advised also. you don't need to wash the scars at all. Just let the soapy water run over them.
Be sure to thoroughly dry the scars afterwards too. Using a hair dryer on the cool setting is the best way to do this. Never rub them with the towel. You can dab them, but must use a clean towel for each incision. xx
