amount of time between consult and actual BA?

hello ladies,

just wondered, how long on average do u have to wait between going for your consult and having the operation?

I know some people put their BAs off until they've saved up or for other reasons such as time off work, childcare etc but i was planning on saving first then going for my consult when i had the money ready so that i could book after having a few consultations if i was happy with everything. i'm just thinking of when it would be easier with work because my holiday year starts in september so i could hold back a week to take in august and then take 2 weeks out of my new entitlement so ideally it would be great if i could time it right. x

For my 1st BA, it was 6 weeks between consult and surgery, but I could of had the op 3 weeks later. For my 2nd BA, it was 4 weeks between although I could of had the op 2 weeks later x

thanks hun that's a help, i will probably book the consult 2 months before i want the actual op, i just wasn't sure whether there was a backlog sometimes, even though it's a private op, i'm sure the surgeons are still very busy! x

For a late August surgery, I'd be looking at finding your surgeon now Lumpy, generally you'd wait around a month, give or take a couple of weeks, but if you wanted those specific dates, I'd be looking now for the surgeon, then book the date you want, you don't have to have the date offered to you, you can request a date and if it's free, it's yours. xx

sorry cookie, i didn't explain myself properly in the first post, i actually meant August/Sept next year! i think the best thing to do is go for a consult around July time, i am focusing on saving up at the moment, and it should be doable if i can get a finance deal as extra for around a year as i have some savings already so i need to save until next year and then see if they'll let me pay whatever i'm short of on finance. i'm also in the last year of my MBA and will be graduating (hopefully!) next July so I want to wait until that's complete as I couldnt imagine anything worse than juggling my dissertation and a major op at the same time! eek!

Ahhhh I see. I'd probably get in there late June then hun to ensure you get the dates you want yes

some surgeons, especially the more popular ones have quite a wait, also take into consideration if you're wanting a popular surgeon that sometimes you could possibly wait anything up to a month to get to see them, so start ringing around in May. Doing it that way you'll be sure to get everything you want Lumpy. xxx

I went for my first consultation a year before my surgery! One day short of a year actually, but that was for personal reasons, not because there were no dates free.

BUT! When I went for my sizing/second consultation I hadn't booked my op, so I guess that was the equivalent of my first consultation really? I had my sizing on the 20th of April and managed to book my op for the 30th June. Mr. Richards added that date in for me especially (it was a Saturday) as my Mum got all uppity but he did say he wouldn't normally be so busy, he just had a lot of PIP girls booked for that time.

It was about two months for me...so your calculation may be spot on amount of time between consult and actual BA? 184153

I had my first consultation with the surgeon I decided to go with (wasn't the first surgeon that I saw) in October, saw him for a second consult in December. I booked the actual date in early January, but my op was at the end of March. So for some of us, depending on the time of year and how busy the surgeon is, it can be quite a wait if you need to get a date that works for both you and the surgeon xxx

mine was only 2 weeks after seeing surgeon i had my op, i was hoping for the next day but i suppose that was unrealistic lol

thanks for the responses ladies, they are fab. thinking about it, i'll probably look to have an initial consult maybe during May time as then I can hopefully aim for August/September time as I would imagine the surgeon I want (James McDiarmid) is a very busy man so at least that way it should tie in and gives me enough time to get my head around it rather than booking the op too soon after, think I would be freaking out if it was too close together! x

I had my consultation with James Mcdiarmid on the 9th of June and had my op on the 29th June! So I didn't have to wait long at all. I'm glad really because I probably wud have ended up talking myself out of it! Haha
I knew straight after meeting James I wanted him to be my ps, he's the best in my eyes( I'm not byest at all!!)

thanks natty. yes i suppose that's another reason for wanting the consult and the op fairly close together to not talk myself out of it! but i think i'd be happier if i gave myself a bit more extra time, i.e. 6 weeks so that i can prepare both mentally and practically for the op and ensure i take the right amount of time off work. incidentally, how long would you say i would need to take off work? my job is office-based and i dont have to do any heavy lifting, just the odd filing here and there so i was thinking 2-3 weeks ideally x

It took me a good 3 weeks to feel normalish again. I wud say 3 weeks wud be perfect but everyone is different hun, u cud feel good in a matter of days instead of weeks. Just remember that no matter how well ur healing take it slow and easy for the first few weeks. It's to easy to become wonder woman again and will end up hurting urself in the long run xxx

If you have an exact date in mind I would get in there early on at the start if next year and start looking around/booking consultations... I'm not sure how far in advance you can book but I know they generally like a deposit (mine was £250) and then to be paid in full just before your op (I think mine was one month before). You don't want to leave everything late and feel pressured to rush to make decisions etc, take your time regarding researching surgeons, sizing etc and everything will work out spot on.

Anything from 1-2 weeks should be adequate hun. I went back after two weeks to a moderate lifting job and just made sure I didn't do anything I shouldn't so I think you'd be fine with office work... maybe a little tired and sore but nothing too bad, x

I had to wait nine weeks between consult and op but I didnt mind as to me that meant he was busy because he was good ! He did do a lot of pip ladies. I could have a different surgeon quicker but decided to wait as I thought he was the one for me xx

thanks for the replies ladies! i think i will try and take at least 2 weeks off work, especially as i'll have my new entitlement in september which will make it easier to tag extra days on to my august hols rather than having to keep too many back! x
