Iceland review women with PIP implants
The ultrasound scanning of women with PIP breast implants
in Iceland has been completed. A total of 350 women took advantage of
the service from February 2 to May 31, 208 of whom proved to have
ruptured implants.
Early this month, 85 women had had their breast implants
removed. The government had invited all women who had had breast
augmentation operations in Iceland in 1992-2010 using PIP implants to
have them removed for free, Morgunblaðið reports.
The BBC reported yesterday that British
healthcare authorities had concluded that the materials used for PIP
breast implants are not toxic and do not increase the risk of long-term
health problems.
However, their studies concluded that the implants were
twice as likely to rupture inside the human body than other breast
implants.
The likelihood of PIP implants rupturing after ten years
inside the body is 15-30 percent, compared to a 10-14 percent likelihood
of implants from other producers.
