Doctos Line and employer 48411 Hi girls can I ask....if you are taking sick leave to recover from BA does your employer have to know exactly what type of operation you are having ? or would they be satisfied with "post operative recovery" ??? .....I am asking as after my 1st week self cert I went to the doctor and she has given me a 2 week line....i have heard that our admin is asking what type of operation i have had to put this on the sysyem but do they have to know these exact details ???? (worried as don't want them knowing my personal business really)Doctos Line and employer 683465

I dont think its any of their business. If a doctor has given you a certificate it means they think u are not fit for work for that time. Dont think it is for your employer to question.

I also had a sick cert from the hospital & my employers never asked. Mine also said 'post operative recovery'.

Doctos Line and employer 476424 Doctos Line and employer 48411 Thanks for that....I'm just really **naughty word** off now after hearing our admin was asking what type of operation (cause she said she needed the details to put it on the system)!!! Grrrr Doctos Line and employer 221105 I think ( knowing her) its just that she's being nosy and trying to make out she needs more details than she does... and she really doesnt need to know details but its got me worried now......also after reading that a lot of girls have taken holidays as cosmetic surgery isnt sometimes covered by some employers (don't know if mine is or isn't ???) and mine was a re-do so I'm not sure if that would cover for medical or not anyway ??? Ahhhh dont need to worry about all this now....will keep you posted......

Very good question and something that's been bothering me! Especially as I work in a male dominated setting! I told my manager I was having an op and would need two weeks off and he accepted that without further questions. I'm not sure whether I will be paid or not. My PCC said the nurse's note won't say what the op is. If they were to ask I'd say its personal, you shouldn't have to give away private information.

Has anyone been to their GP or nurse to get theirs extended? I'm sure I'll be fine after two weeks but I do work a lot with my arms, do some lifting/pushing.x

Tell her you had a mole removed on your back!

If she works in HR, then it will have to remain confidential if you do tell her, otherwise, its none of her flipping business and she's just being nosey!

Why has she been asking other people and not you? Is that very professional? I have to hand in a sick note two and I spoke to HR and told them that this was not an elective procedure but a corrective one that the PS insisted on doing. I would have put it off to a more suitable time for work (as I have only been in my role a few weeks) but was not allowed to do so. In the past I have always used holidays. It will state in your contract how long you are allowed off at what rate of pay. I was allowed 10 at least paid days but since I have technically been with my company a lot longer than a year (been in this role and a similar one for a year) then I could possibly get more. I know my company can insist on me going to see our company doctor when returning to work.

If she continues to press you for further details just tell her it's personal and leave it at that. It's not her business to know, you've been signed off and will be signed back on when you're fit to return, that's all she needs to know babe. xx

I would not tell them it's for cosmetic surgery as legally they don't have to pay you for an elective cosmetic procedure, although I'm surprised a Dr gave you a sick note unless its for a complication.

If your doctor's note only states "post surgery recovery" then they don't need to know. You may have to go through a return to work interview but as previously mentioned, should be kept confidential. I read somewhere that "Hernia" was a good white lie to use if you're really stuck as the recovery time and rules about lifting and activity are similar (not 100% sure though).

I agree with misf1. Even though they have to pay Sick pay for a doctors note employers are allowed to specify that they exclude sickness for elective surgery and you should take holiday instead. Lying to them is a really bad idea because even if they can't stop you taking sick leave it could really put you out of favour with your employer. I think it depends how much you value your job x

Hi Guys thanks for your replies.....I am sore again today ..(been doing too much I think :() anyway I am going to try to be vague with them hopefully just saying operation on return to work thing and post operative recovery is on my line.....With me I'm not sure how the elective surgery thing is with a re-do ??? I had my first op 20 years ago and really did not want to have to get this done now believe me ....cc forced the issue so I'm not sure but hopefully this would come under corrective surgery rather than an elective procedure if push came to shove as it were ?? anyway I'm hoping that this will be enough information ....the mere fact that youve had an operation and to prove it the doctor has given a line saying post operative recovery should surely be sufficient info.
