Too Underweight for Surgery??
Hi Girls..
I was wondering if there is an optimum/healthy weight that you need to be in order to have surgery??
Currently i am 7st 10lb (BMI about 17) and classed as underweight...
Any input greatly appreciated!! xxx

Re: Too Underweight for Surgery??
hi there didn't want to read and run lol
I was on NHS for my BA and i know they would want all patients to be at their healthiest weight. Not sure how private places would be though.
If you have aways been underweight then i suppose you can't help it as its just the way you are, you'll prob then not be able to get as big an implant as you would have with a bit more weight on i suppose.
sorry if that wasn't much help lol

Re: Too Underweight for Surgery??
It will probably deppend on ur ps hun. I was 7stone 10(bmi was18.5) when i went for my first consultation with my ps, He said the biggest implant i could have was 365cc so i gave up smoking and put on just under a stone in weight (look and felt much healthier too!!) although my boobs didnt get any bigger for this hehe. I went back before my op and he said because of my weight gain i was able to have 410cc so reckon misty is right in saying it will probably just have an inpact on the size if u are not drastically underweight. I have since put on a few more pound and i'm now just under 9 stone!!lol I think this is because i haven't been as active until now so hoping some excercise and a better diet will get me back to around 8.5 stone (This is what i feel at my best at:)) Good luck hun xxx

Re: Too Underweight for Surgery??
If your having a op via the NHS then yes hun they wouldnt do the op as you have to be in the healthy range for weight as they class being under weight as High risk.
As for private clinics im not to sure, mine done my weight but didnt mention anythin about my weight, which at the time was on the border line for being under weight by 1lb........its a safety thing and I would like to think private clinics would be the same as NHS but I think as they are all about the money that may well not be the case I would give your clinic a call and ask them how they work with weight.
I personally think ALL clinics private or NHS should take weight into consideration as being under weight makes you high risk while under G.A and I would never want to be put at high risk for the sake of getting my B.A done.
How tall are you hun?
I was 8 stone and 5 foot 4 at the time of my op, My B.A was done with out 1 mention about my weight and it was only when I went for a hernia op with the NHS did they point out that if I lost 1 more LB they wouldnt do the op as its to dangerous being under weight and that really upset me as I was never told this when I had my B.A .....

Re: Too Underweight for Surgery??
annaliese..i went up to 8.5 stone just after i had my son..then it all came off again through stress! But that weight was the healthiest i have ever felt..would like to get back to that, although all that weight was on my bum, and never the boobs!!
Crystal..i think you are right about being high risk, i was classsed as high risk with both of my pregnancies due to being underweigh, tho i was fine and so were my babies, i will try to put some weight on before my consult with mybreast in feb, but i'll ask about this being a possible issue too..
I am 5ft 5ins and 7st 8lb when i weighed today xxx

Re: Too Underweight for Surgery??
Momo I'm underweight too. Always have been apart from when I was breastfeeding.I was weighed on the morning of my operation by the nurse. Nothing was mentioned. I don't look drastically underweight and have no health issues. My weight fluctuates every day. I could do with half a stone more as I would feel happier. But nowI have boobs I look like I've gained weight! Looking at your avi you don't look like you have anything to worry about. Xx

Re: Too Underweight for Surgery??
Thanks momo! I think we are very similar builds apart from you're taller than me ( lucky girl). Seriously. You are more than welcome for a pic. You can pm me to exchange email addresses.
You have time on your side to make a conscious effort to eat more. I stepped up my eating a couple of weeks before my op and managed a couple of pounds. xx

I noticed that you had overs, i was assuming with a AA cup like i have, and you started with that you would have to go for unders? Did you have round implants? xx

Re: Too Underweight for Surgery??
I haven't aways been a AA cup. When I was younger I had bigger boobs, probably around a B cup. My PS said I had a good amount of breast tissue. He also doesnt do unders unless he really has to. Doesn't like cutting into a healthy muscle unless he really has to. I have Nagor GFX 300 round silicone cohesive gel HP. X

Thanks for the info..its interesting how many different opinions there are on whats 'best' I guess it really depends on the surgeon that you go to for the final decision. xx

Re: Too Underweight for Surgery??
Like I said I think Most Private clinics would do the op as its all about the money but when the NHS tells you that your classed as high risk for G.A due to your weight then that would bother me, to me I wanted my op BUT I also wanted it to be safe and putting girls at high risk due to them being under weight seems crazy to me .....
Im naturally small and always have been so i was quite upset when the NHS told me if I lost 1 more lbs they wouldnt do the op but my hubby made me realise that its for my own safety and they wouldnt say it if it wasnt true.
I also personally wouldnt find it a good thing if a clinic was well aware of me being under weight yet would still do the op and didnt say a word about my weight..........
If I was you hun I would eat as much as you can and try and put on as much weight so you not at as high risk for the G.A, I know its hard when your naturally small but its worth it Knowing your going into your op at a healthy weight and not at high risk
xx

Re: Too Underweight for Surgery??
I'm just under 8st too but 5'6, when I had my consultation, he commented on my small frame but never mentioned anything about not being suitable for surgery!
I think it's more important your healthy - I drink 2 - 3 litres of water a day, eat lots of fruit and veg etc, I'm obsessed with nutrition! Just trying to put my body in the best shape for recovery!

Re: Too Underweight for Surgery??
Hi momojack, it's not a problem if you're underweigh. They will be taking your pre-op stats and take everything in consideration during surgery. I'm only 43 kg and none of the five surgeons i've been to has ever told me that I can't have BA because of my weight

Re: Too Underweight for Surgery??
Crystal - i know exactly where you are coming from i certainly wouldnt want to put myself at any aditional risk.. xx
I've started to up my calorie intake and walked 3 miles this morning to up my apetite! Going to try and keep this kind of gentle excersise going every other day so as not to burn off too many calories.. im not planning to book a BA for a few more months so i have plenty of time
xaxa - the difference in opinion can be so confusing cant it.. where none of your surgeons said it was a problem, and Crystals surgeon said it coulld have been, i was "high risk" during pregnancy due to being underweight too..?! i guess i should just focus on being as healthy as i can be..
xx

Re: Too Underweight for Surgery??
I think this subject is extremely important and it may be worth going to your gp to check you are fit for surgery, I would not trust some companies, just look at the pip scandal at the moment, they want your money, they don't give a dam about your health. So it's up to us all to check whether we are at a healthy weight for elective surgery, too small or too big and it can be dangerous. Don't forget emergency procedures are done no matter what your weight, but this is elective.
Re: Too Underweight for Surgery??
Momojack keep up the good work. It gets easier once you've kick started your appetite. Just gaining a few pounds will help you feel healthier and stronger for your future operation. I try not to concentrate on my BMI or the scales, I just keep up with the calories and keep active. I know when my weight has dipped (normally when I'm stressed or poorly) and then it takes me a bit of time to build back up. xx
