Companies V Independent surgeons
Hi Girls,
Im in the process of having some consultations. Now I was wandering if you had come across any disadvantages/advantages of having an independent surgeon.
The thing that cropped into my mind originally was this : Lets say I have my op through a company, if god forbid something happened to that surgeon ie. he/she passed away and I needed a re-op, its not a massive deal as one of the other surgeons I presume would be allocated. However if I went with an independent surgeon and this happened where would I stand?
Any experiences/thoughts?

I looked at independent surgeons before I looked into the companies. The one thing that I disliked was the fact that you didn't get the same length of aftercare and also follow up appointments were not free. You'll find that alot of surgeons work for themselves and the big companies, and you'll get cheaper consultation (if not free) prices and the operation is cheaper (or you can haggle). xx

Re: Companies V Independent surgeons
I think the big disadvantage of going direct with a surgeon is the amount of aftercare they are able to offer, they just aren't able to compete. Also after looking at what has happened to surgicare and them voiding their aftercare, I would be worried that a surgeon may close down his private business and only work with companies, I would doubt they would be able to honour their aftercare. I would also be wary about going with a small company in case they go under.
Re: Companies V Independent surgeons
I personally think its best to go somewhere in-between, and go with a small company. I'm probably biased because i'm going with a small clinic called sthetix. I just think smaller companies are better because its more individual care than the big companies who have thousands of patients every year. Also smaller companies tend to use better quality implants as standard, e.g natrelle. Whereas the bigger companies use cheaper implants as standard, e.g CUI implants. You're getting the standard of aftercare of the big companies whilst getting the quality of an independent surgeon. Just my opinion! xx

Re: Companies V Independent surgeons
There are pros and cons to all options.
Independent surgeons often can't offer as comprehensive aftercare as the bigger clinics but can offer more in the way of individual care.
A massive company can offer better aftercare, but will often take the cheapest option to combat their low prices (eg using standard implants, foreign surgeons who don't have BAAPS etc accreditation) and some women do feel like they're on a conveyor belt of thousands of other girls who are in and out as fast as possible.
A medium company is usually the middle ground. Not cheap, not as expensive as a surgeon, some offer good aftercare, some are lacking.
I think you need to take each option on its merits and weigh up the pros and cons.
With regards a surgeon kicking the bucket, you can always ask and see what they say! Would be interesting to find out!

Oh wow I hadn't even thought about this so thanks for this topic. I'm going with an individual surgeon (John Davison) and I've done my research and like what I'm reading so I guess my questions to him on my next consultation will defo be re the aftercare he offers!

Re: Companies V Independent surgeons
I went with an individual surgeon, i found that a lot of the surgeons with the big companies have less experience and it did feel like i was just more money to the companies and as the girls have said they use cheaper materials.
I decided i'd rather have a more personal experience and better materials used than lifetime aftercare and my surgeon offered a year of aftercare anyway which i though was enough.

Re: Companies V Independent surgeons
I went to see two large companies, Transform and the Hospital Group, but I think I have decided on a smaller company, Sthetix.
This was mainly because Dr Alvi was the most experienced consultant I saw, and my doctor recommended him. The more relaxed, personal approach made me feel important too, rather than just another patient. They only offered the higher quality implants.
The aftercare is an important consideration. This is my main worry with a smaller company though I must say.

Re: Companies V Independent surgeons
Hi there, yes I thought he was very professional and I felt I could trust him. I also liked the way there was female in the room whilst I was sized up. It was the only place that did this as if the norm, which certainly made me feel at ease.
No date yet. Hope to sort out tomorrow. I have three kids, 6 yrs old twins and 3 yr old, so need to arrange family support too. As need unders I have been told not to lift for at least 3 weeks.
nice to know somebody else is using Sthetix as I have googled the company but didn't get much response.

I had my surgery with MyBreast and only saw my ps, who also had the nurse in the room when he asked me to remove my top. This made me feel more at ease too, as I didn't have this with the previous consult with a different company.
