Implants dont have to be changed??? Empty Implants dont have to be changed???

Post by welshvicci123 10th October 2011, 7:17 pm

Hey Girls,

I was reading a peice of information on the web and here it states

The breast implants do not deteriorate or decompose in the body and the silastic bag does not migrate away from the local area of implantation. There is NO REASON to routinely replace an implant after a certain period of time (e.g. 10 years), though patients commonly believe this.

I had also watched a programme on channel 4 about implants and the male doctor thats on embarrasing bodies stated implants dont have to be changed.

Is this true? Do they tell us we have to have them changed every 15-20yrs for a reason? Im totally confused :S

this is the link to the site

What do you girls think?

I believe its not because anything bad will happen to the implant, they'd last a long time after your gone. They are very much built to last. Although the research has been in to how your body deals with your implant inside your body and your skin elasticity, so yes your implant could last forever, but the longer it's in your body, the more likely you are to develop complications such as CC. Plus your skin will change as you age, gravity does catch up eventually.

Agree with all the statements above. My PS told me there was no "need" to change the implants, and he had patients who still had their original implants 20 years + later! But he also said "obviously, an implant increases the size of your breasts, and the larger your breasts are - natural or augmented - the more likely they are to sag, and often women choose to have them replaced to improve the aesthetic again".

This has made me feel a bit better! I was in tears this morning telling my husband how I am setting myself up for surgery every ten years and I am scared to go under the GA and now I am going to have to do it every 10 years. Obviously if there is complications then you need to have surgery again but if this is true that there is no reason to change them for longer than ten years then thats good, that makes mes feel a bit better :)

I was told that they may never need replacing but might need to release them from scar tissue after 10/15 years.

I was told that they only need to be changed if something goes wrong such as CC, rupture etc. Maybe the 10-15 year lifespan thing refers to the old style implants where such problems were likely to happen aften that amount of time.

I was also told this by my P.S......he said there was no set time to "change" the implants and that I should just get them check out every 3 years to make sure there are no ruptures.

I asked him if there is no set time then whats the least time they should last and he said 10 years at least but if there is no problem them there really is no time limitImplants dont have to be changed??? 267328

Hey girlies! Loving this post - Lolly did your previous implants that lasted 15 years; where the the standard CUI's?
As Im unsure if to opt for the Natrelles shrug

Its nice to know theres no set time, i will be trying to do a bit of saving though for the worst :) x x x

I like this thread a lot!! :)
I'll be creating a boob fund over the next few years anyway just incase they need replacing, but that would be brilliant if they lasted longer!
