what happens when you get to your 60's or 70's?
I just put this in the forum section for a surgeon's attention, but I can't imagine surgeons are on here often!!
So, I'll try here too as I really would like to know the answer:
Hi,
I'm 26 and seriously considering surgery. One of my concerns though is the fact that after about 10 years (or 20 years according to "MyBreast") you need to have them replaced... now, I intend on living past 40 lol! So.... say I get my breasts done next year, at 27.... and say I go for the MyBreast company who reckon theirs last twice as long.... that means that I'll be getting more surgery at 47, not so bad.... but they last 20 years, so what happens to me at 67?? surely I'd be too old to do it again then? Surely I can't have another set put in? If I did, what happens then??
So what would happen to me long term? would I need to go in, in my 60's to have what I've got removed and then end up with empty, flat bits of skin?! Or, do women that age actually get more implants put in?! What about women in their 70's?!?
Seriously what happens when you get old???
thanks
Lozzy

Hi hun,
Gosh that's a question and a half lol!
Well I've only just turned 27 myself and I'm 6days post-op and I haven't gave it that much thought to be honest...
I guess I will just deal with things as and when they happen, but to be honest I'm very much of the mind-set that I will be pleased to still have an upright (ish) a pair of boobs in my sixties and beyond!!

Re: what happens when you get to your 60's or 70's?
Oooo good question!
I dunno, I'm almost 42 now and a very different person now to who I was in my twenties so I should imagine, when I'm in my 60's I might well have very different ideas and opinions to the ones I hold now, so who knows what I'll decide to do... I guess I'll just wait till I get there and take it from there.

Not all implants need replacing. I had mine done last year at 23 and although I except that one day I may need them redoing its not to say I will need them done in 10years or even 20! Obviously I am prepared for further surgerys later in life though. I think while its a good thing to think about for me personally I'm trying not to think that far ahead. lol. x

Re: what happens when you get to your 60's or 70's?
hmmm yeah I too like the idea that mine would still be perky and nice at that age, lol! My worry is how I'd heal when I'm 70!! Whether the implants get removed altogether at 70 or replaced, there's obviously healing involved and it's scary getting into something that's going to affect me for the rest of my life without knowing exactly what would happen when I get to 70.... even 80!
I know most people prob wouldn't care what they look like at 80 lol! But I would like some sort of info... if anyone, anywhere has ever done it in their later years and what the results are like.
I hope they don't end up just removed and I get left with two saggy empty "sails" lol!

LOL - great question - and great answers too !!!!
Not something I have really thought about myself to be honest am just obviously aware that in future years whether it be 10, 20 or 30 years due to choice or necessity I will have to face more surgery.....to be honest I am more worried about where my 4 sons will plonk me in my 70's and if they'll visit me and shave my old woman moustache for me I'll no doubt grow LOL xxxxx -BUT on the bright side I'll still have bangin' boobs ha ha xxxx

Re: what happens when you get to your 60's or 70's?
The average life expectancy of a silicone body replacement part (knee, hip) if done at 20 is 5+years. Yet if done at 60, which is much more common, they are minimum 10 years.
Part of this is down to older people being less active therefore wearing out the part slower than a younger person but part is down to a younger person having a better immune system which starts to reject the implant.
i may be wrong, but was told this at age 18 when I did Eventing (horses) and also cross-country ( running) and suffered with acute knee pain, apparently I needed a knee replacement at 18 or stop riding competitively. I stopped riding as I was worried that I would need a re-op in just a few years. The surgeon at that time said the longer I could put it of for the longer the new knee would last.
Also, to change tac completely, I have a terminally ill friend and she is a constant reminder of live for today, who knows what tomorrow brings I am a worrier and I just have to stop myself thinking what if and go for it!!

I think when I am 70 my boobs will be the least of my worries - no doubt other bits will be dropping off by then!!

Re: what happens when you get to your 60's or 70's?
I personally don't think its the silicone that gets worn I think its our bodies. If you think about it your boobs will change shape so much in the next 20/30 years but providing the implant doesn't rupture it'll still keep its composition and position.
So for example having saggy breast tissue in your 60's on an implant thats higher on your chest will require a re-op... although this depends on how much tissue you started out with and your nipple position/height.
I won't be getting a re-op in 20 years providing my breasts havent sagged and the implant hasn't ruptured (touch wood).
saying that I've not known anyone that's had an implant longer than 14 years...
