GA= KETAMINE!!
yesterday i was reading through my company magazine about people taking ketamine at partys to get "high" etc, and that lots of people had become paraylzed for a while or unconcious, it then went on to say that ketamine is used as a general anetsthetic in hospitals etc to knock humans and animals out completly for ops. i knew ketamine was used on horses but i didnt know it was the same drug as us. no wonder it takes us a good few days to recover from a ga! x

Re: GA= KETAMINE!!
Ketamine is very useful as an anaesthetic as it has a reversal agent available - so if you go too deep or develop other probs as a result of it.
I am a Vet Nurse( not currently working as have baby)and the effects a drug have on one species can be totally different to the effect it has in another, for example, there is a drug which a single scratch from the neede used to draw up the drug woul kill a human very quickly, a horse would only need a couple of mls to be out of it for ages and yet a dog would hardly be touched by the horse dose.
So don't panic, ketamine is a very pure, safe drug in a Consultant Anaesthetists hands.
agree with you though, Kate1977, the canula is awful - the most painful bit by far and it's left in post-op for a bit too and it is really awkward and uncomfortable!!
Good Luck ladies xx

I read this article too mizzpink! was really interesting! Ive seen people on ketamine at party's and its not a good look i must say! lol Im not sure if it is still used as much as an anasthetic, but has apparently been trialed for use on children, Ive only ever seen it used in a powder form but i think its really scary that people are taking tablets that could contain enough dose to knock the person clean out very very stupid!!

oh god, why wood anyone want to take it, if it just knocks you out or as good as, theres us who worry about a ga to have an op once in a blue moon and theres other people take the drug on a daily basis and never give it a second thort. well i defo wont be worrying about a ga like i used to, in the right hands im sure its very safe. x

Re: GA= KETAMINE!!
ladies dont panic......they won't be using Ketamine on you!!!!! They use it out at the scene of accidents to reset bones etc. For ops you have a drug called Proprofol.....its white and puts you under quickly and can be used to keep you under. You recover from it very quickly. What makes you feel groggy is the gases they use to keep you alseep and the drugs they use to paralyze you whilst you are under. They do this to minimise the the nerves twitching during surgery and so they can control your breathing. Hope this puts your mind at rest girls.
