No drains, no strapping? Empty No drains, no strapping?

Post by Lynnie 29th January 2010, 3:59 pm

At my consultation through Mybreast the surgeon told me he doesn't use drains as they 'aren't necessary' and that my boobs wouldn't have lots of dressings on just a sports bra. He also said that I should be back to doing what I normally can do within a week.

Please could I ask you ladies of experience for your comments on this? It seems to be different to what I've seen and heard so far Shocked

Thanks x

Post by Jessica 29th January 2010, 4:20 pm

I didnt have drains or strapping, I came round with just two steri strips on my scars and no sports bra on, my surgeon doesnt think they are neccessary. I loved it cos it was more comfy that way and found there were no adverse effect from my surgeons methods, quite the opposite actually as I got used to my breasts really quickly and was so much more comfortable - I only wore a sports bra at night and when I felt like it during my recovery. Hope this helps xxxx

my surgeon doesn't use drains either. I didn't have strapping either. I woke up wearing a bandage around my boobs and was told to take it off the next day. I had 2 plasters covering my scars and i wore only a sports bra. It is different for different surgeons.

My surgeon says he uses drains, I'm really scared as I'm such a wimp!! My OH said I will be fine, what does he know he hasn't had them!! I've heard many people say they are evil and they really hurt?! I'm more worried about this now as I will have the numbing gel lol for my hand, so i'll be okay for the GA. Wish I didn't have to have the drains!! x x

My surgeon does use drains but said i didn't bleed much during surgery so I didn't need them. I woke up with a post-op bra and an elastic strap across the top which I wear for a month. All surgeons used different methods and give different aftercare advice so in the end I think you have to go with your gut instinct when it comes to which surgeon xx

I had drains and woke up with really tight bandages round my boobs which were taken off by the nurse the next morning and the drains were removed which didn't hurt me at all. I then lived in my support bra for 6 weeks xxx

He didn't use dissolvable stitches though so had to have them removed (doesn't hurt though) just means you can't get your top half wet for 10-15 days when you have them removed. Shallow baths and a wet flannel lol.

I had to have drains.....I was dreading them being removed. It was no problem at all, I was just told to take a deep breath in and then she whipped them out...didn't feel a thing.

By the way I'm a wimp too!

I had the same surgeon as misf1 and had exactly the same experience. No drains or strapping. I did take 2 weeks off work (as I'm a driving instructor and wanted to make sure I was going to be ok in the car) but quite honestly I could have gone back after one week. The non dissolving stitches were fine too, they came out painlessly and easily at post op check and now I've got very nice neat little scars.

Same advice for me Lynnie, although I did have a sticky tape about 2inch wide on top of my breasts for a week, I believe as they are anatomicals. No drains. Recovery for me was easy and return to normal activities too...though I am not a mountain climber or anything similar No drains, no strapping? 557141 Worst part is lack of normal washing routine and smelly hair!!!
