Hi all - I'm 11 days post-op today and am really struggling with knowing what I should and shouldn't do. I'm not in any pain as such anymore, just a tight, bruised feeling in my pecs where he must have cut them. (Eww!!)

For the past couple of days I've been doing things like washing my own hair, cooking, doing the dishwasher and washing, reaching for things if it's comfortable, but I haven't braved picking up my children, driving, pushing the buggy or hoovering yet.

When do you think it's safe to do things like that? I really want and need to get back to some kind of normality but I'm so worried about damaging my lovely new boobs! My home help is coming to an end and I'm petrified about tomorrow when I'm going to need to do all of those things (bar the hoovering as my lovely sister is doing that for me right now, bless her!)

Would love to hear your thoughts and experiences...

Hi hun, i would ask your ps when its safe to pick up heavy stuff or children, at my 2 week check up my ps said to refrain from picking up heavy things and lifting my arms over my head. This will add strain to your scars to and could make them wider so i would say take it easy like you have for about a month x

Well he said no heavy lifting for 2 weeks and to be careful for a month. The trouble is my family have to go back to work so I don't really have a choice!

I think I'm going to try and avoid lifting for the next 2 weeks, but do it if I desperately have to. I don't like the idea of my scars stretching atall, but I'm a single mum and I've already asked SOOO much of my family.

It's so tricky...did anyone else lift children after 2 weeks and if so how did you get on? Did it do any damage? My youngest is such a chunky monkey - nearly 16 months and still not walking!!!

hi sweety,
i cant comment as im in the same boat as you, i just wanted to say thanks for the post as i would love to see the replys. i have been asking myself the same questions your asking.
my youngest is 18months but she is walking, im just worried about pushing the buggy, picking her up and the hoovering (like you). My hubby goes bk to work tomorrow and im sending the kids to school on the school bus as my sister gets on a few stops after and she takes the 2 smaller ones to class. So its just the baby im worried about im sure i will manage tho.
hugs

Hey hun,

When it comes to lifting, only do it if you have to and if it hurts, stop.

If you do need to lift anything, try to get it as close to your body as you boobies will allow, and try to use your legs to do the hard work, for instance, bend right down, hold your baby and use your legs to lift. Do the same if you are laying your baby down to change nappies ... bend your body to do most of the work. Again if anything is painful stop and find another way of doing it.

I'm sure you'll be fine, I was doing the hoovering very gently at around 2 weeks PO - I just made sure that I was very, very careful and very light movements.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice Maria - I will definitely bear that in mind. I've had an interesting afternoon trying to get my little boy to climb into his highchair and cot by himself by lining up cushions and beanbags and it DID NOT WORK!!! He thought I was a madwoman!!

Amanda - you're lucky your lo is walking! Mine will crawl up and down the stairs at least...but only manages 2 steps! I'll let you know how I get on...eeeek....! May have to get creative!
