What do I do now??"
I’m due for surgery on Saturday, everything is planned and in place – feeling good, happy and excited….until my partner separated his shoulder in an accident last night!
Agghghhhhhhhh
He is over at the fracture clinic this morning. His coach who took him to A&E last night had the same injury and got it the same way about 6 weeks ago is totally recovered already and was driving again after a week. BUT that was him and everyone is different.
The problem is we run a business together and can’t be off work at the same time, so trying to see if we can get him into work and what the pain is going to be like if he does go in. We also have a large dog that is a bit special who normally comes to work with us who would have to stay home (with me) I had planned to be at my mums during the day while recovering. So all of these things have a solution – they might need some careful planning in terms of logistics but it’s really disappointing that its happened so close to surgery day.
I have emailed the surgeon – they can move it a month to the 16th June but it then just interferes with a few things already in the diary and I’m SO close I can almost touch my lovely new boobs!
I guess I just had it all sorted in my head how my recovery would go and it involved being looked after and no stress. Which kind of looks a bit unlikely now!!
So should I reschedule it or keep the date???

Oh you really didn't need that. Not sure what to say on that one except you will need help with certain things and if your partner is laid up which I think he will be who will help you. Or should I say who will help both of you ???
See what hey say to him at clinic but I would be thinking or re scheduling but that's only my opinion. You will need rest and as less stress as possible when you have yours xx

Oh no! Thats terrible [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] :-( for the both of you! Personally, if it were me i would try and reschedule.. as much as you dont want to, you need to think your need looking after and he will now too. Unless you can get someone to help the both of you at home and at work then that would be good. I hope it all sorts out for you!! xx

Re: What do I do now??"
I know its so tricky.
One our employees has offered to come and pick him and the dog up each day for work and run him home so that is OK. I can get mum to take me to the hospital on Saturday so that is sorted. I guess I had just visions of being waited on hand and foot with cups of tea and nice dinners! The reality is that he would of been at work all day anyway.
Can just imagine us both sat on the sofa not being able to reach the remote control!!
He is due back from fracture clinic in an hour or so - guess that will determine what the next step is. I really dont want to wait another month....

Haha aww [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] that made me laugh about the remote! Just make sure someone is there looking after you both, and dont put yourself out to care for your husband.. as horrible as that may sound your going to be healing yourself so doing washing, cooking and getting things for him is a no no!
Glad the work sitch and your mum helping out is all sorted :-) xx

Sorry to read this!
If re scheduling is going to be the best option for both you and your OH recovery/ stress wise I would re schedule, another month isn't that long to wait. See how he gets on at clinic before deciding what to do, you will have a better idea of how incapacitated he is going to be.
Its a rotten thing to have happened so close to your surgery date, feel for you!

Re: What do I do now??"
When you say separated, do you mean dislocated? If it's just popped out, they should be able to shove it back in and he'll be fine in a couple days. It depends if he's done muscle/tendon damage. Wait for the results, it may be that you have to postpone. But a month is nothing in the grand scheme of things

Re: What do I do now??"
No a seperation is when the top bone that runs into your collar bone comes away from the rest of the shoulder joint, its only held in with tendons and things (from what I understand) so he has a big lump sticking out along the top which should settle back down. Its not as painful immediately as a dislocation, he was OK last night when he got back from A&E just sore, but he will be in a sling for a while. Well depending on what they say at his appointment. He is sensible with his body so he will do as he is told to aid recovery (despite doing it flying head down carving round the outside wall an indoor skydving tunnel at 90mph....)

Indoor skydiving. Head down, 2 way formation flying. AKA scary whizzy fast stuff = splatting into a wall hard!

Oh jeez! Luckily D's not tried that one yet...gorge walking, cliff jumping, parascending, everything else to put my heart in my mouth, but not skydiving!

Re: What do I do now??"
If you think its viable to go ahead, as it sounds quiet a few people don't mind helping out, then I'd probably go ahead. If its genuinely going to be too much work then theres no point pushing through your recovery to try and cope with everything. I know rescheduling and pushing it back seems a bit of a downer, but you'll still be getting them =)

Re: What do I do now??"
Thank for the advice ladies, I've been trying to think about what I would advise someone else - head over heart etc.
Will have a proper think and decide. We are lucky to have some family local so it might mean I have to explain why I can't drive either but at least we will have some help if we need it.
I know what you mean [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], we have been in A&E a few times - avulsion fractured ankle from gymnastics, concussion from wakeboarding (both were front flips gone wrong). If it can be jumped off or ridden he is there in a shot!

Oh Lord. It's a tough one and so close to your surgery too, bugger. I know if it was me I would just keep my surgery date and try to muddle through. There's always a way, but that's just me!
Your poor fella, ouch.
Good luck and if you did have to wait a month, it's not too much longer really. But again, I'm impatient. .... lol x

Right...I'm going for it.
I've emailed the surgeon and told them not to reschedule.
We will get through it!! (famous last words - feel free to give me a forum slap next week when I am having a moan!)

Re: What do I do now??"
I have breezed recovery so far. Hubby went away the morning after my surgery and had our almost 3 year old by myself and coped fine. Having said that, I really think I've been super lucky and my surgery wasn't as invasive as yours.
When you take into account how long you've been waiting for this, a month is nothing, however if I were you I would have gone for it too!
See how your hubby is over the next day or so, you can always rearrange at any point so don't feel pressured to go ahead if it gets to the stage where you're not sure you'll both cope xx

Re: What do I do now??"
I know its a tough one - whats another month right in the scheme of things? But....I want them NOW!!!
I had hip surgery in Oct so I know what to expect with GA recovery, codeine toilet issues etc. And we are both resourceful - with my hip I developed lots of little systems round the house, I would make a flask of tea in the morning and put it in a bag with my snacks for the day and newspaper / post etc then hang it over my crutches to get back to bed. You soon adapt to doing things slightly differently to manage. My mum is off work all of next week and lives about 20mins away so she is REALLY looking forward to looking after me...which will be nice at first I'm sure!
