What did you tell your employers?
Hi girls
In a bit of a pickle here just trying to work out whether it would be better to go off work sick when I have my BA or get pre-approved annual leave? On the one hand annual leave will be very difficult to get but I 100% do not want my employer to know why I have been off if I need to provide a sick note. Do you girls have any ideas what I can say to them? Can I simply say that it is private and confidential? what did you lovely ladies do?

Re: What did you tell your employers?
I took my boss into a room, said I'm going in for an elective surgery, I want to take a weeks holiday for it, then work 2wks from home. And nothing more was said. That way he knew I was in some sort of recovery, without knowing the details. But I know that my work is very flexible on these things, and I am lucky enough that I can work from home.
You can get an 'anonymous' sick note, Drs have to respect your confidentiality, so it will read 'general surgery' rather than 'getting your baps done, lets all have a good gossip'!
Its entirely up to you really, how you feel it'll best play out. Also you need to take into account what you do for recovery time. if you're an office bod, a week might be fine, but if you have a much more physical job you may need longer.

Re: What did you tell your employers?
Thankyou. Ah I'm glad that worked out well for you. See I think my main problem is that I'm a nurse and therefore much harder to pretend I am having elective surgery as my boss will no doubt pry! It is a very physical job so I do worry also that two weeks won't be enough time to have off so it also needs to be a reason why it could be ongoing and not just the flu or something that is expected to be over quickly! It's so difficult isn't it and frustrating that we have to jump through hoops till we can finally feel good about ourselves!! Xx

Re: What did you tell your employers?
I took annual leave then when it became apparent that I wasn't going to be fit for the possibility of the more physical aspects of my job my GP was kind enough to give me a line for my work requesting a couple more weeks light duties, stating a pulled muscle, wasn't an entire lie , just didn't say the muscle had been pulled to place implants under them...lol XXX

Haha yeah, brilliant! Going to see if I can get annual leave and go from there I guess. My fear is that they'll say I can't have it and then when I phone in sick as a last resort they'll be very suspicious :/ xx

I took annual leave, I didn't get paid sick from my work and I didn't want to have to explain myself.

I told my employees the truth as I felt that I could and they all totally understood and wished me the best of luck and really did look after me after I had it done xx

Re: What did you tell your employers?
Hi I'm a nurse too, I'm booked for 22nd November. Get a doctors note for general surgery. They have no right to pry into what surgery it is. I'm taking 6 weeks off as I know that on the ward it is very heavy! Put yourself first for a change. The union should be able to advise you. I know what you mean though . If I phone up and say I have diorreah, they tell me to come to the ward to get a sample bottle! That is against hospital policy. Going onto a ward infectious. The nhs is hard work to work for at times. Xx

Re: What did you tell your employers?
I didn't want anyone to know and didn't want to raise suspicions so took annual leave. I'm relatively close to my boss and although she would have never asked why I was having surgery it would have felt weird not telling her when I'm usually very open so thought it was best she didn't even know I was having surgery. Much harder for you though as you might need lighter duties after so I would agree with Anne's approach!

Hi anneritchley, haha I totally know what you mean about having to provide samples etc! I can only imagine what my boss will ask! Thanks for your help all. Just wondered, how quickly was it between seeing the consultant and scheduling your BA? Is it a fairly quick process or long waiting lists? I'm in a hurry now and want it done yesterday! Xx

Re: What did you tell your employers?
IT all depends on the surgeon from what I can gather. But I had my first consult on the 13th October and I'm booked in to have BA on 22nd November . I have my second consult on Monday just to go over a few things.

Re: What did you tell your employers?
I think it really depends on 1.what your boss is like and 2. the relationship with your boss! my boss isnt someone i feel like i can talk to in confidence and dont particularly like her either! I went to work 6 weeks pre op and told her I was going off to have an operation and didnt wish to discuss it as felt embarassed (i didnt!!) she didnt say much but could tell she wasnt happy. I got her a sick note asap and that was that x

Re: What did you tell your employers?
I jut took a week off and didn't say anything. As far as I am aware, apart from my husband, nobody at work has any idea that I have had a BA.
