BA and New Job?
Okay, I've found the surgeon, clinic and now the finance is in place too so all systems go yes?
No, I've hit a bit of a BUT.....
As some of you may/may not know I have just finished my nursing degree and have been offered a contract of work at the hospital, I do not yet have a start date as I am awaiting my PIN for my nursing registration to come through and I have to have occupational health clearance and pre employment checks done.
Obviously this job involves a lot of manual handling, so to be honest it suits me more having a BA sooner rather than later, as I also don't want to tell work I am having them done.
I have told work that I have a two week holiday booked from the 31st of Oct (The date the surgeon has given me for surgery) they said they need to check when my start date is and calculate how much annual leave I can take as its halfway through the financial year....
Do they no have to honour my (pretend) holidays even if they were 'booked' prior to employment?
confused and slightly worried now as I don't want to have to wait til after april next year to be able to book 2 weeks off together to have it done...

Re: BA and New Job?
I've always thought that they do, even if you don't actually get holiday pay for all/any of it. But I may be wrong... Hopefully someone who knows more will be along sooner x

Re: BA and New Job?
If they are pre booked I think they will have to honour them, you've told them before so should be o.k. You accumulate days from when you start, it may be the case that you will just be in front of your holidays. I suppose depending on your start date, how much holiday you get. Good luck, let us know how you get on.
Congratulations on job too xx

Re: BA and New Job?
Thanks ladies, to be honest I want this that much I really would take it unpaid, as taking it paid feels a bit like taking the **naughty word** out of them really due to only just starting....
I don't think my start date may be until November anyway as I cant pay for my PIN until 23rd when I get paid and then have to wait for it to be processed and my pre employment checks aren't until the 16th of October...
Confusing stuff hey girls!! Will be devastated if I cant do this!

Re: BA and New Job?
Hi yes they will honour pre booked holidays mine did I had booked off 2 weeks over xmas when i started and they still took me on. Also the NMC can seriously drag its feet with getting your PIN through. Mine took nearly 2 months to go live from when uni informed them i had completed the course. They send you the paperwork though to sign then it can still take another 10 working days for them to actually add you on to list of reg practitioners Occy health and the CRB or whatever they call themselves these days can also be sloooow. Nothing ever happens quickly in the NHS so to be honest i would just go ahead with what you had planned, if you cancel you could well end up not being able to start then anyway.
PS My surgeon gave a sickness cert too , I am awaiting a start date for my new job so i am off anyway only banking on my old ward for now as and when but my start date was supposed to be mid October and has now been put back to November!
Congrats on joining the wild world of a Staff Nurse!

Re: BA and New Job?
Thank you its exciting and terrifying at the same time becoming a nurse!
I really don't want to have to go off sick or anything...
I am banking on the ward I have been given the job on at the minute so suppose if it came to it and I didn't have start date I could just refuse the work they offer as im not contracted to do so by the bank.
I still need to think of where im telling them im going, time to start fabricating a story and stocking up on fake tan lol!!!

Re: BA and New Job?
Also if I book my BA, will they rearrange the date for me to have it done, or do you end up losing the deposits then?

no they don't although usually if they are aware of the holiday when offering you the job they will honour it x

Re: BA and New Job?
when I worked in HR we had to honour any holidays that was already booked IF they told us before they started the jobm if they tell you after then we didnt have to honour the job, if you havent accrued enough work days for a holiday then they will need to give you it unpaid
hope that makes sense
also if the BA gets moved then normally theres no charge etc aslong as you can take a date the surgeon/clinic offers x

Re: BA and New Job?
I'm an employer babe. If the holidays were pre-booked when they offered you the job then they do have to honour them babe.
As your Job is manual you're also going to need a note from your GP when you go back to work also signing you off heavy duties until you're six weeks post-op. You will not be able to do any heavy lifting whatsoever after your BA for six weeks babe, so the note from your GP will cover you for this. The note doesn't have to say that you've had a BA. It can just say you've have had 'general surgery' if asked by anyone so cheeky as to be so nosy what surgery you had, we've had many ladies go through the same here and you're fine to just say "I'd rather not say". You're not obligated in any way to go into depth. The note stating you've had general surgery which is what you had will cover you. Xx

Re: BA and New Job?
Hi 1st off congratulations on qualifying. Your ward should honour your holidays for you.
Im an auxiliary nurse and was told I would need 6 weeks off due to how heavy my ward is.x
