What Did You Tell Your Children?
Hi ladies,
just wondered how you explained your surgery and recovery time to your children? Mine are 10 and 5 and I dont think the 5 year old will ask too many questions but the 10 year old is a bit suspicious already. I think I am just going to explain to her about why I now require surgery (to remove PIPs) but dont want her to worry about it so I dont know how to approach it.
Did you tell your children? Or did you just tell them that you were poorley and needed a lot of help with things for a few days?

Re: What Did You Tell Your Children?
Your kids are at the age where they'll tell EVERYONE! Lol
So, depending what you want others to know that's what you should tell them.
If you're fine with them knowing then a 10 year old would be able to take in the explain action I'd say.
But if you're anything like me and wouldn't want it announce in assembly hahaha I'd just tell the kids you have a bad back and need to get it fixed. This covers you stooping after surgery, being unable to drive... Everything really. Its a very plausible excuse. So its really up to you and what you're comfortable with hun. Xx

Re: What Did You Tell Your Children?
Yes that is true! Haha. I do think my daughter (10 year old) could keep a secret but not from everyone so the bad back thing might be the way to go! My surgery is currently booked for the school hols so they will be with me most of the time. I think my daughter might ask questions about why they will be sleeping at Grannys for 2 nights whilst I go for the op so going to have to think about that one as well :-(

Again hun... The bad back excuse is a good one. It just about covers everything. Xx
Re: What Did You Tell Your Children?
I havnt got children but i think cookies idea is a good one. When they go to stay at their grannys you could say that your back is feeling sore so your going to have a rest!! You can say you told their gran and she offered to look after them for you for a few nights...then when they get back they will expect you to be a bit sore anyway? xx

Re: What Did You Tell Your Children?
Good idea! How do I get around them asking why Dad cant look after them though? As my hubby will be coming with me? I could say that he is working but my eldest will wonder how he is working all day and all night lol. Sorry, how awkward do I sound? Just trying to think of all the questions they will ask thats all, my 10 year old is very bright so takes a lot to get stuff past her!

Re: What Did You Tell Your Children?
Haha aww she sounds great! Yer i would say that hes coming with you... When i was younger i loved staying round my grans so i would say if i had kids... something along the lines of that i have a bad back, ive told gran and shes offered to have you stay round there while your dad takes me to get checked up and i would be more than happy lol!
Its crazy in a funny way sitting here trying to outwit your ten year old lol. From seeing a few of my younger cousins at a similar age i know what you mean....they seem to be getting cleverer haha :) Good luck though, maybe talk to your OH aswell to see if he has any ideas :) xx

Re: What Did You Tell Your Children?
Haha its crazy isnt it! She was suspicious going to Leeds yesterday for my pre-op so I told her I had to have a medical check-up for uni (which is true but its not in Leeds haha). She was happy enough to go to McDonalds with Dad while I went to the clinic. But now she has seen my dad giving me a credit card and I can see her brain ticking lol.
I will have a word with hubby and see if he can think of anything. She worries very easily so I dont want to cause too much alarm. I have suffered with back pains before though so it would be believable I think :-)
Thanks for all the ideas!

Dad needs to look after 'you' hun. You've got a bad back and dad is helping to look after you for a few days till you're feeling a little better. Xxpr1ncessmummy wrote:Good idea! Re: What Did You Tell Your Children?
I was 100% honest with my daughter.. I always have been with everything.. when she asked me at 4 how do babies come out of their mummy's I told her straight! It works for us as she asks a question, gets the answer and that is that! I had an uplift and BA after loosing loads of weight so I told her that I had wrecked my body by being fat and eating unhealthy food and that because I had eaten too many sweets it had wrecked my body and that now I was healthy I still had problems because of being fat in the past.. moral to the story dont eat too many sweets and chocolate and unhealthy food or you will pay for it... literally!! I used it as a useful health education session!! She just accepted it and that was that! I told her if I hadnt been so unhealthy I wouldnt have had to have the operation in the first place and that I wouldnt have to feel poorly so its always best to be healthy and she agreed!!

Re: What Did You Tell Your Children?
Aww bless her 5stonedown! That is really good that you could use it as an educational chat as well. My reason for having my first BA was because my boobs had shrunk and sagged after having my daughter though so I wouldnt be able to tell her that!
I am a very honest mum with both my children with regards to things like where babies come from etc, theres no birds or bees in our house haha. I would like to think that she would understand if I did explain to her but at the same time I dont want her to have unneccessary worry or for her to feel that smaller breasts are inferior in any way as she is very slim and may not develop much of a bust herself :-( Its so difficult because shes very mature for her age.
Thank you for a different perspective on this :-)

Re: What Did You Tell Your Children?
My daughters are 10 and 8 and I didn't want them to know. Firstly because I don't want the woke world to know and secondly because I don't want them worrying that they won't grow any boobs (recently had mine replaced after 13 years so they never saw me flat chested). I told them I had a bad back and they were fine with that. Went to stay at grandparents for a few days which helped too. Day of the op I decided to go by myself so that my hubby could take them to school and they thought I was staying night at my parents to take them to airport. I hated lying but it was the right thing to do for my girls. Hope you find something that works. X

Re: What Did You Tell Your Children?
Hi, my boys are 9 and 5yrs. I am usually very honest with them, we don't have bird and bees either, lol. My 9yr old Is very bright and is a deep thinker. He would question why and how which is good but I wouldn't want him broadcasting his new knowledge, we live in a small community so gossip is fierce and comes mainly from the dinner ladies at school! When I told him about how babies come out (he asked) I told him about the 'normal' way babies make their way out. He came back the next day and said 'some people say that babies come out of their mums tummy'. So I gathered from that he would go to school and discuss anything I tell him!
I did worry about mine questioning me so I just kept it very sparse with details, I told them that i was fine and not too worry but I had to go get my tummy checked at the hospital and I would be away for a day. After they thought mummy wasn't too well and had a sore tummy and that's why Nana took them to school for a few days and why they couldn't bundle on top of me, lol.
You know your children and how they are most likely to react, go with your gut instinct with what to tell them. xx

Thanks so much redtulip and RayRay! Its really good to hear everyone's perspectives on this! My daughter spends a lot of time with Granny as they are very close so I will see what my mum thinks as well. I have a while to decide yet so all these ideas are fab :-)

Re: What Did You Tell Your Children?
Hi huni x I have 7 children. 17, 16, 14, 13, 11, 7, and 2. I told all of them the truth! Other than the 2 year old, I just told him mummy's boobies ouchy! Which he seemed to understand. I didn't see any reason to make up a story, the older 2 were very helpfull, the eldest took a week off college to look after me. The 14 yr old said " mum promise you won't tell any of my friends" lol. He was very embarrassed about it. And the others just laughed and said " ok mum".
But I do believe it a personal choice, wether or not you choose to tell your children. Some women say they have hurt their back, some say its their ribs, and some don't say anything! You will find what best suits you hun xx good luck xx

Re: What Did You Tell Your Children?
I told my 5 year old I was going to stay with my friend for the night and that Grancha (my dad) was taking me up there. When I came back I said I had hurt my back. She's a clever child though and got a little suspicious and I'm sure she heard my mum, dad, auntie or whoever mentioning the words "hospital" etc and she said "you didn't go to your friend's house Mummy, you went to the hospital" but she assumes I went there because of my back. She's too young to need to know what a boob job is!x
