Should I ask for a pre-med? Empty Should I ask for a pre-med?

Post by Selena8683 11th June 2013, 10:06 am

Hi girls,

I have alot of questions running round my head today, but I was just wondering if I should ask for a pre-med before my op? I am really nervous (excited too), but more so about the GA than anything else and after reading Adele's story it's just got me thinking.

Will a pre-med make me even more out of it when I come round? And are there any risks involved with having one? xx

Hey Selena, I asked the nurse about a pre med when I had my pre op appointment last week. She told me that it can make the recovery longer but if i wanted it then when I go down to theatre it wouldn't be too late. After thinking about it over the weekend I'm going to try and have it without, the girls on here have reassured me that its not as bad as we think it is. I will just be asking for the magic numbing cream!

Enjoy the next few days and good luck for Thursday :) xx

Hi Selena, I was adamant I would need a pre med because I was terrified of the GA but in the end I just had numbing cream so that I wouldn't feel the canula and then it all happened really quick without me having time to think. Once you get to the hospital and have spoken to nurses/anesthetist/surgeon you will feel so much better and reassured. I am a major wuss and I would do it again in a heart beat!

My nurse told me at my pre op that I I required a pre med I ought to tell the nurse as soon as I got to the hospital but like I say I was happy with just numbing cream in the end xx

Thanks girls! I have said all along that I will try to stay away from a pre med especially as I was worried about how it would affect my recovery! It's a classic fear of not waking up from the GA that is getting to me.....but I'm goin to have to man up and deal with it!!!! xxx

Don't put any additional pressure on yourself by thinking you may need a pre-med Selena... You may find you're just fine on the day and will have put yourself through all that worry for nothing!

IF you do feel a pre-med would be helpful to you on the day, then approach it then lovely by simply asking the nurses for it. They will do all they can to make this experience as easy as possible for you so you really don't have to worry.

Aside from sickness after surgery, of the thousands of women that I've seen come through Breast Buddies over the years, not one of them have had a problem with the GA hun. They're ALL fine.

So think about it hun.... If sickness is the worst that can happen and can be controlled by anti-sickness meds, is that really so bad? Xx

Well, I think after this little discussion it's probably best I steer clear! I think on the day I might actually be slightly calmer than I imagine.....if I do feel like I'm going to bolt out of the hospital doors then I might consider it, but I'll wait and see! I'd rather not have a longer recovery just for the sake of something that will take a matter of seconds!

Thanks girls! xxx

hunni, you dont feel a thing with the cannula seriously they do it so many times every single day of the week that there experts, dont worry about waking up, i know its a very common worry with many women myself included, but this is why they moniter us throughout the surgery, so they can see we are under enough and if are stats were to slightly change meaning we could come out of ga they would top us up, just go to sleep and enjoy as it is over with so fast you dont even feel you have had a nap with just the ba xx

I think that's best babe... The main thing you need to do to ensure you get all you need for a good recovery and reassurance is talk to the surgeon and the anaesthetist. You will have time to discuss this so don't worry about a thing. They're there for YOU babe and they're going to take very good care of you. If you feel you need reassurance don't be afraid to ask for it... Bottling it us will just make you feel worse, but if you talk it through... Then they can help you through..IF need be Hug xx

I think your right! I think your getting all worked up about something that's not going to be an issue. You will be surprised how calm you actually are on the day. I know your worried that what happened to adele will happen to you, but these things happen for a reason and poor adele just wasn't ready. She will get her BA hun, and in 2 days you will get yours!!

As for the GA, I was terrified of it!!! I spent ages pondering over the what ifs, but in reality it was great! I said goodnight and was out like a light! I didn't even know the canular was going in let alone anything else. I had a slight tickle at the back of my throat, but I had read on here that it is normal to feel you want to cough so it didn't worry me. X
