Over vs Under - Which do you prefer and why?
Hi Girlies
I've read up on overs vs unders for months and months and wanted to hear opinions from ladies who have had implants or are having implants rather than the text book pro's and con's.
I love the overs look but am a little worried about rippling and how long they will look good. But Im still swayed more towards overs.
So which did you have/do you prefer and why? Xx

Re: Over vs Under - Which do you prefer and why?
In all honesty i can't say that i can tell the difference between them all. I'm having overs but only because i have enough breast tissue, my surgeon also refused to do unders because i have tuberous breasts so it wouldn't help the shape but would cause double bubble and even told me if i was adamant on overs then i'd have to go somewhere else haha x x x
Re: Over vs Under - Which do you prefer and why?
I prefer the placement that best suits the persons body type.
There are pros and cons for each placement but the best placement is the one best fitted to your own body type to help get you the best look.
If you look at everyone's avatars I bet you couldn't tell which of us had over and which had unders? X

I think both look natural, and both have pros and cons. I had unders as I had no natural breast tissue left after breast feeding my children x

I agree... I had overs as 3 surgeons all advised they would be best for me!

I agree with balamory. I don't think you can tell when it is just by choice. Unders are generally necessary on people who are very skinny and don't have enough tissue.
I am tiny but had enough tissue to cover mine so I have had overs and I am glad about it. I think they hurt less.
My PS recommended Natrelle implants which are designed specifically to reduce/not to get that rippling. They have a lifetime guarantee too. Whatever that means - but my PS says they will look good for a VERY long time. I also read up on them and was totally satisfied about that.
So really when you now the brand your PS is in favour of just read up on them. A lot of the girls here have had the allergan natrelle's for these reasons I think xxxx

I love em all. I had overs and love them, haven't had one problem, but I'd quite happily have had unders too, if I'd needed them.

Re: Over vs Under - Which do you prefer and why?
I'm having overs and I'm happy about that for the following reasons:
-they won't lose any size once in my body
-less healing pain
-quicker healing
-jiggly movement and bounce once healed
-they are recommended for my body as I have enough breast tissue
Obviously there are also cons about overs and also pros for unders but these are what I concentrate on when I'm not feeling nervous, which I generally am these days. :(

I have unders and I am very happy, very soft, bouncy and because of my tiny ish frame you can't see no ripples etc..
I had little breast tissue and they look big but natural, and fake if need be..
I think everybody body's is different and I would leave it to what the surgeon thinks is best..
Have they suggested unders or overs?
Xxxx

Hiya, thanks for that. I'll be having the allergen natrelle like you with the lifetime guarantee. I just need to lose this extra stone then and hope I don't lose anymore breast tissue as my surgeon said at the moment in borderline and can have either

He said I'm borderline at the minute I could have either, but I have a stone I want to lose before the BA. I've already lost 11lb and a cup size so hopefully won't lose anymore tissue

Most of what's on your last is the reason I want overs :-)

Re: Over vs Under - Which do you prefer and why?
You can lose up to 10% of implant size with unders I believe. But as for pain, I had no pain at all, none! I only took painkillers twice in the hospital because they made me and once at home because I couldn't get to sleep and they made me drowsy! Both overs and unders bounce and jiggle and wiggle like overs. You should go with the recommendations from your surgeon! He will be able to look at your anatomy and measure your breasts and tell you what he thinks would be best. I went into my consult thinking I was going to have round, smooth overs, and came out after deciding on anatomical textured unders!

Re: Over vs Under - Which do you prefer and why?
I had overs as they were recommended, I had enough breast tissue and they settle quicker and were less painful.
No one believes that my boobs aren't real as they bounce and jiggle and look really natural.
I personally think that overs look more natural and stop that rounded, augmented look at the top of the breast, but that's just my opinion.
My friend is teeny tiny and had unders. Hers look totally different to mine, but that might be just because she is so slim.
I had my BA nearly four years ago (wow, time flies) and they still look the same as they did when I got them done.

Re: Over vs Under - Which do you prefer and why?
I thought it may help to add a BAAPS/BAPRAS members opinion (James McDiarmid) on the partials/overs debate too.
And another here:
James McDiarmid wrote:
The decision as to whether an implant is best placed under (usually partial under or dual plane) or over the muscle is one that is best decided at consultation. In general very skinny people with minimal breast tissue do better with implants under the muscle. When implants are behind the muscle they are normally fixed higher and more firmly to the chest wall. They also move when the muscle contracts. I tend to use teardrop shaped (anatomical) implants behind the muscle.
Implants placed in front of the muscle tend to hang, move, feel and (very importantly) age more like a natural breast.
My feeling is that if a patient has the anatomy to support the implant being placed in front of the muscle then this is normally the best place for it. This is after all the natural pocket occupied by the mammary gland. I tend to use round shaped implants in front of the muscle.
An experienced surgeon should be able to advise you appropriately,
And another here:
James McDiarmid wrote:
The usual answer is that it all boils down to thickness of soft tissue coverage (determined by skin pinch) and to a large extent it does, however there are several other factors which figure in the decision.
This conventional wisdom is largely based prior to the advent of form stable (less ripply) implants and holds very true in extremely thin ladies.
After 20 years of medical practice and 10 years NHS consultant and private practice the basis upon which I take the decision to encourage patients to have either unders (usually partial unders/dual plane) versus overs has evolved quite far.
I do not think that there is a correct plane for every patient indeed certain patients would have a good static (i:e photographic) result with a round or teardrop shaped implant either in front of or behind the muscle.
What I would definitely say to you though is that the enhanced mobility of a subglandular (over) implant means a more natural dynamic result. The implant will move with the breast gland as it is filling the natural plane that the glandular tissue normally occupies.
So an 'over' implant will hang, wobble, feel and age more like a normal breast than an 'under'.
The enhanced tissue adherence seen with 'unders' means that in addition to being prone to move with pec major contraction the implants will tend to be rather fixed to the chest wall and not flop to the side when the patient lies down in bed or on a sun-lounger. This is both an advantage and disadvantage as unders will be more gravitationally stable through this enhanced tissue fixity. It can also make them more prone to development of double-bubble as the breast ages and droops and the implant stays up high.
In a nutshell - for the most natural result go for overs if you can. Unders are great in certain patients but not necessary unless you are super skinny.

Re: Over vs Under - Which do you prefer and why?
i had unders. i was told by 2 previous surgeons that i could have either unders or overs and then my surgeon agreed that i had JUST enough tissue for overs BUT as i wanted to go up a significant amount he felt unders would be best for me as they would provide added support for the weight of the implant and as i'm only 21 he said 'if i give you a heavy implant over the muscle it will sag and when you are ready to replace them you face the prospect of having a full anchor uplift in your late 20s/early 30s which i'd rather avoid for you' so i'm happy with his decision :)
sounds like you're pretty set on overs but if you did end up having to have unders after your weight loss i thought i'd add that as for pain, i haven't had pain at all during the process. had a bit of discomfort in the beginning with the muscle but it was bearable. the worst part me is morning boob which you get no matter the placement. Personally, from being on here a while, although they say 'unders are more painful' i think it's largely down to personal pain threshold and how well you recover than anything. I've seen girls with unders sail through and girls with overs have a really rough ride. xx
