Rings
Will I have to take my jewellery off for surgery? Just thinking about it because if I do I think I would prefer to leave my engagement ring at home where I know it is safe.
Thx

Re: Rings
Yes, best to leave them at home. All piercings have to be removed too.

Re: Rings
I'd personally leave all jewellery at home lovely. If you wanted to keep your ring on there would be the possibility of having it taped over on your finger, but I personally think the best option is to keep anything of value safe at home. Xx
Re: Rings
Yep - everything off. There was a girl in the same day as me who had had to take her hair extensions out as well as gel nails etc... She was really cross :) xxx

Re: Rings
You can keep a wedding band engagement ring on, they can tape it, like Cookie said. Everything else is better to leave at home. They should have lockers to keep things like mobile phone, purse etc though. Where I work you get asked to sign a disclaimer too, so ultimately the property you choose to bring into hospital is your own responsibility. Just take essentials! X

Thanks, think I'll leave all my jewellery at home to be on the safe side. Phone etc will come with me as couldn't be without that!

Re: Rings
all piercings, no exceptions? what is the reason for this?
i have a piercing in the top of my ear which i have never removed (for the last 10 years!) as it would close up straight away / would be a nightmare to try and get back in...
can i not just put tape over this as well?

Re: Rings
I think its to do with metal and when you are under sometime they use electrosurgical unit to help control bleeding and the metal can cause it not to work properly and i was also told when you are under you can swell up xx

Re: Rings
The reason you're unable to wear piercings is because of monopolar cautery and defibrillation - Cauterization using high frequency electrical current passed from a single electrode where cauterization occurs; the patient's body serves as a ground.
If you have piercings in it could result in burning your skin. Some anaesthetists are quite lenient and may allow you to leave piercings in but have them taped and ask you to sign a disclaimer form, others just won't allow piercings at all. Xx

Re: Rings
hmmm i will need to find this out in advance then!
i think there is a plastic 'placeholder' piercing you can use instead, i would just have to sort this out beforehand.....
thanks ladies x

Re: Rings
Blueeyedsoul and anyone else who is worried I got to the day tried to take mine all out which I managed bar one my tragus which is never taken out before and it wouldn't unscrew everyone tried and it wasn't budging so they just put some tape over it and told me of the risk but how it was very unlikely to happen hope this helps :) xx

Re: Rings

Re: Rings
I really shouldn't imagine tongue bars being allowed due to them possibly being an obstruction whilst you're having the tube in your mouth to help you breathe whilst you're under GA.
You're generally back in your room in around an hour or so anyway which hardly anytime at all and we've had ladies here with freshly pierced tongues who have no difficulty at all replacing the piercing after waking. Xx

Re: Rings
hi jasmine, that's really helpful thank you! i haven't tried unscrewing mine for a long time, but the one time I took it out to swap pieces of jewelry i remember the hole seemed so much smaller than the jewelry bar, so I really wouldn't want to deal with this on top of all of the BA recovery ;)
