day case/over night stay?
I booked up last tuesday, but I was thinking would they let me change to a day case now? I thought I lived to far away to do it that way but then I've heard of people staying in a near by hotel for the night and it works out much cheaper. Is a day case a wise thing to do as I've never had a GA and I dont really know how I'll react to it!
do you think they will let me cos I've booked already? How much cheaper is a day case?
Also does anyone know any cheap hotels close to highgate that have parking?
thanks xx

Re: day case/over night stay?
Hun ... i had a similar choice. Due to a mix up, mya said i could stay in overnight for the same price as a day case. But i live reasonably close the hopsital and all i wanted to do was go home. After taking advice from the lovely ladies on this forum i decided to stay overnight and i'm so glad i did. I was really sick in the night - nothing serious, just a reaction to the GA - and i really don't think my OH would have coped!! You are so comfortable in hospital - they will treat you like a princess - you have the special bed that you can adjust (rather than propping yourself up with pillows - and if you do feel sick, they will bring you anti sickness drugs. Especially as you have never had a GA before- for the sake of a couple of hundred pounds i would stay in overnight and get looked after. x

Re: day case/over night stay?
they most prob will let you change hun, no harm in ringing up and checking, I have booked for a day case as id rather be at home personally to recover saying that i too hope im not to rough after the op as i dont like the idea of having to travel home feeling sick lol i have a phobia of being sick. Everybody is diff hun, do what you think is best hun. Let us know what you decide xxx

I was an overnight case, but I think even if you are a day case and not very well that they won't let you go and will keep you in anyway? That's what happened to a girl when I was in anyway x

Yeah, that's right. I was a day case and was fine after my GA. I really just wanted my own bed after the op, couldn't stand being in a hospital without my OH to slave over me!

Re: day case/over night stay?
I was overnight as my surgeon preferred it as most complications arise right after the op i.e hematoma, infection so i prefered it for piece of mind and i loved it, felt like i was in a hotel and really well looked after
Re: day case/over night stay?
I think it depends on your mindset, some people prefer to be nursed during the first night as they'd worry otherwise. Others are fine with going home.
If you feel it would be best to stay over then I think it's best you do. If you feel you have a good support network (ie someone to drive you home, call the nurse if there are problems, get you your meds and food etc) then you'll be fine at home.

Re: day case/over night stay?
I decided to go overnight cause I've never had a GA before, and I think I will be stressed enough about having an op, that I didn't want to add more stress about whether I will be okay to go home the same day. Plus my surgeon uses drains!
It's an option us UK ladies are lucky to have a choice about, I think, the USA ladies seem to all get sent home same day, loaded up with pills!!

Wouldnt advise daycase.. you dont know how you will feel after or how your body will react to the GA etc or how much pain you will be in. I stayed overnight and glad I did even tho I didnt have a bad time. I wouldnt have a daycase just to save a bit of cash x

BB, I was fine after my day case, and with the company I went through I had a nurse on call 24 hours a day for the first few weeks. Of course, if you have to stay in overnight then the nurses won't actually let you go home, especially if you're being sick and are very drowsy.
Depending on how far away you live from the clinic, I'd say day cases are a good option for those that feel they have enough support at home to help them through the first night. If they don't, then I agree, overnight is the better option.
