Bio-Oil??
I'm having my op next Wednesday and brought some Bio-Oil today. The nurse said that it's good to rub on the scars when they have healed, but a friend of mine also suggested rubbing it in to my boobs to help prevent stretch marks..... Would this be beneficial or not really?? I always moisturise with Cocoa Butter anyway, so my skin is pretty supple. The only thing I'm worried about is that the Bio-Oil contains Vitamin E, and my PS told me to stop taking any Vitamin E products because it can cause bleeding. Any advice anyone? Thanks xxx

Re: Bio-Oil??
I would strongly avoid putting anything on or near your boobs/incisions until you get the all clear from your nurse/surgeon to minimise the risk of infection... Usually at the 6 week mark.
I've seen the scars of women who have used bio oil and they look great ... Well they're barely visible that's how great! Whether it works or not who knows, but it's worth a try! It can also be effective for stretch mark prevention but I've heard it can be very greasy, possibly not something you'd want rubbed into your boobs on a daily basis. You can always give it a try and see how you get on with it though!
If you've got a good routine with moisturising I think you should be ok though, but do whatever you think will work best for your skin. Avoid anything with vitamin E as your surgeon has suggested, you pay for his advice so it's worth following.

Re: Bio-Oil??
Hi hun. You have to be very careful about putting anything on your scars until you are absolutely sure they are healed because you can introduce infection and thats the last thing you want. I have had 2 b a and didnt use any oil and my scars are barely visable . Could be I had a great surgeon. I put bio oil on the scar on my leg after breaking my leg and having a metal plate in and its barely visable so who knows I take large dose oral vit e caps every day since this b a as I had capsule contracture 1st time and there is some evidence it helps prevent it. Vit e is a blood thinner I think as is ibuprofen so you shouldnt take it before any op. Good luck with your op hun its such a wonderful thing to have xx

Isn't it funny what conflicting advice we get! I saw my surgeon today for my 2 week post op check and he said to use my normal moisturiser to massage my scars, followed by sillicone gel. And that's after 2 weeks!
I'm not suggesting this as everyones post op advice is different, more surprised about all the different advice I hear xx

Re: Bio-Oil??
As long as YOUR surgeon gives you the all clear to use any lotions/creams/oils on you're new scars, you're good to go But never do this without your surgeons permission first because as mentioned above, until your scars are fully healed, you're very much at risk of infection. This is 'generally' around the 6 week mark, but could be sooner depending on how quickly you heal. If you still have any openings to your scars, even after the 6 week mark, you're best to leave them to close before applying anything to them.
gvfab - Your moisturising routine should be fine. The cocoa butter is just as good as the bio-oil, as the bio oil is more expensive, I'd save that for post-op lovely, it's easier to massage your scars with the oil too to help break down the scar tissue. xx
