G.A....??
Just out of curiosity. and i know i should prob know this.
but how is a person anaesthetised during a BA.
when i walked into theatre all i remember is climbing up to the table then being wired up to a machine to monitor my heart
the canula was inserted at the back of my hand and i was then given a mask to breathe oxygen whilst being given drugs through IV
then i was asleep zzzz..
so what happens after that, is that it? is it all just controlled through the back of your hand / through a mask?
or are you intubated with a pipe down your throat?
xx

Re: G.A....??
Well I was at 1st given a injection but that didnt work on me as it went in my vain then some came out the hole a inch higher up my hand where they had tried to get the canular in the 1st few times! so after realising I wasnt drifting off & that I was wide awake they then went for a second lot, which I reacted very slowly to so then they went for the mask & made me breath deep...............the only down fall to this was I went down for my op at 7-30-8am and didnt wake up till 4-5 in the afternoon and was totally out of it, they later exsplained that It took nearly 3 times the amount of G.A to Knock me out but once they managed to get me out due to the amount I had it took way longer then it should have to bring me around.....

Whoah Crystal I can't imagine having that much! I bet you were away with the fairies!
Whilst on the subject of being asleep during your op... Do they sit you up at all during the procedure? I have bruises on both upper arms and wondered if it was from being pulled up? X

Re: G.A....??
I think you have to be but on a breathing machine with a tube down your throat as its a G.A so you dont breath for yourself do you?
Yeh it wasnt the best thing for me really and I did freak out at the time! I have had a fair few G.A I think 5-6 in total & only 2 I didnt react well to the other 4 I was totally fine with If anyone is going to be odd with it its going to be me! as anyone who Knows me...

Re: G.A....??
My anaesthetist told me he was going to put a tube down my throat
He had to explain it in detail to me, because I have crowns on my front teeth and people have a tendency to bite down on the tube as they bring you round and take out the tube - in some cases people have been known to break their crowns!

Re: G.A....??
Hey Hon,
In animal (I'm a vet but hey - they're pretty similar to us!)
We give a 'premed', for my op that was fentanyl and went in my cannula but some people will take tablets before the op. Thet's usually a pain killer and sedative
Then the anaesthetic goes in your hand. Depending on the actual one they use (there's 3 or 4 different anaesthetic drugs) this lasts about 10-30 mins. So when you fall asleep, they put a tube down your wind pipe.
In animals we don't ventilate them as they breath for themselves, we tube them because they lose their gag reflex when they're asleep so if they vomit in their sleep they could inhale it =BAD.
But I heard sometimes in people they give muscle relaxants then ventilate you - not sure if that's only for certain ops though or done all the time.
Through the tube you get the anaesthetic gas. This keeps you asleep while the op goes ahead and the injection anaesthetic wears off. The gas works very quickly and stops working very quickly so that after the op they turn off the gas
Then when you start waking up they pull the tube out :)

Re: G.A....??
Do people start waking up and sometimes just forget it? I ask because my surgeon told me that he'd said what sizes he'd used after surgery... But I only remember speaking to a nurse in recovery? His words were "can you remember what sizes I'd told you I used" ... But then I remember in recovery it was like a sudden waking up feeling.. And asked the nurse then. X

Re: G.A....??
Yup, I remember waking up in recovery cos the nurse had a go at me for itching my face when she was trying to do my bp :( and I vaguely remember someone asking me if i wanted to go back to my room and I said yes. But it's very patchy - a bit like after a good night out!!
