Post by Shorty 13th May 2011, 5:37 pm

My mum had breast Cancer 20 years ago. She had a lumpectomy twice so vitually a masectomy. There is a lot of scarring and she is very aware of them. I believe it has a detrimental affect on her self esteem.

Since I have had mine done she has admitted how hers affect her and would love to have hers done too.

She is in her 60s and has no money. Has anyone heard of any charities that can help or going the NHS route? I want to get as much information as possible before speaking to her about it so I don't get her hopes up.

Thanks in advance.

Shorty.

Oh sweetheart, I had a lumpectomy too years ago, I didn't approach my GP for revision and looking back, I should have really and I absolutely understand where your mum is coming from, so send her a hug from me Reconstruction 571992

Like Ruby explained, it's getting harder for people to have this surgery through the NHS now, in saying that though, if your mum is considered an exceptional case, who knows, they may just fund the op for her, it's worth a try without getting her hopes up I think.

If that fails, then is finances are tight, it may be worth her approaching the bank for a possible loan if she thinks she can afford it, I know she's 60, but with her having such insecurities after going through that, she might well find the op to be life changing, so if there's a way for her to have the surgery, she should definately go for it - I wish her lots of luck lovely. xx

OH I can't believe that this kind of surgery is so hard to get on the NHS, it's disgusting as there are so many bloody benefit cheats out there screwing money out of the tax payers and your poor mum would REALLY benefit from surgery that's not REALLY going to break the bank of England.

I really do hope she gets some help and that she has a good GP to fight her corner.

I really do wish her all the very best and if I win the lottery I'll be in touch hun xxx

Ah thanks Yetti,

I gave my mum a call and without me mentioning it she talked about it herself. She has a friend also going through cancer and her friend advised her to go to her GP as well. You can have reconstruction at any age. It is looking positive right now and my mum has some hope. Thanks for all your kind words and my mum is very grateful too as I told her what you all said xxx

I just hope she gets some help. I must be a fool to have thought that woman in your mums situation would automatically get help from the NHS. I'm so sure if mans willy fell of or was difformed it would be sorted immediately. After all you couldn't possibly expect a man to be difformed! Sorry rant over and all the very best to your Mum xxx

I think from what one or two people have told me, breast reconstruction after cancer is normally available on the nhs. Implants aren't normally available unless there is a medical condition to warrant them.

Get your mum to see her gp. I have a few clients who have had this done after cancer.
Please send your mum my best wishes and I hope she can be helped on the nhs.

Yetti,
I totally agree with you..................why should benefit cheats be given free funding when people that do deserve this money spent on them get brushed under the carpet. Makes me really angry.

It would be an absolute disgrace if your mum cant get it on the NHS !! They are tightening up on it yes but they are still handing out gastric bands and gastric by passes willy nilly, I have had 3 people close to me the last few months tell me there doctors have OFFERED them these, It makes me angry as they have no medical condition what so ever they are just fat and lazy and do nothing about it (they dont even work ffs ) GRRRRRRR makes me mad !! Sorry x x x x x I really hope your mum gets sorted after all she truely deserves it I have everything crossed for her x x x x x x

mmmh, have you thought about giving her a facebook page and call it something like.. help my mum get her boobs back!! or somthing qwirky??!! people could go on and donate to you, maybe onto your paypal account to keep it safe...not sure how it all works, but ive heard of things like this working! maybe hav a look on support sites for peopl who have been through what you mum has and see what advice they can give you!
my motto, where theres a will theres a way!! If the NHS say no, raising the funds online is becoming so common, im sure she,ll get what she deserves soon! :)

I am not sure I could jump out of a plane. I would do the marathon or something similar although I am not very fit at the moment and have never done it before so it would be a challenge.. Any requests would be listened too. Perhaps I could do tasks for people they don't want to do themselves and get people to donate. Hopefully the GP will say yes. I am up for it if needs be though. It would make my mum so happy.
