cant believe what happened today ... :(
Hey everyone well just thought i would come on here and have a little ( well quite long sorry) moan/rant and maybe some of u can give me some advice....
so here goes..... I went into asda today to get my lovely sports bra for after ba booked for 3rd march get into my car all excited as it started to feel soooo real when i had a phonecall which makes me upset thinking about it just now, it was transform. one of the nurses who will be doing my pre op next week was just getting my file ready when she noticed that i am on medication which i told the surgeon all about when i met with him to make sure it was definately ok to have the surgery and that it wouldnt cause any problems, which he assured me it would be fine and that the only thing was a slightly increased risk with some of the problems that can occur, he even went as far as to explain to me that i should take my medication the night before and not the morning so as far as i knew there were no problems i was aware of the increased risks but the main thing being that it was ok to operate .... so i thought!!!!!!the nurse gave me the news that unless i stopped these med 3 weeks before i couldnt have the op done and they wud cancel it ... BOOM my world came crashing down i know its not a life saving op , i know its not essential but for me and im sure many of u out there its a life changing op and one that i have longed for for years and years!! you see the thing is i am on a very low dose of prednisolone which is a type of steroid ( not the sports ones lol) as i have a condition which i wont bore u all with, and with this med u cant just stop it , it has to be gradual and also if i stop it completely i will be in a lot of pain and discomfort so i just dont know what to do!!! my Patient co ordinator called me after hearing from the nurse and i was panicing about losing my money which i have paid in full already, anyway she said that the nurse is known to be over cautious and that if the surgeon said it was ok to me then she will call the hosp tomo to see what they say about it!! and the thing is my cooling off peroid ended today so now i am sat at home worrying i am A) going to lose the money and B) i am going to be forever flat :( so i have no idea what is going to happen tomo and now i am even doubting doing the op if there is a problem with the meds i am on because i dont want any complications from surgery, so i am gutted , upset the lot :( :( see the thing what gets me most is if the surgeon told me that it may not be possible there is no way i would have booked this until i knew i would be ok to come off my meds!!!
sorry for going on but thanks for reading this (thats if u got this far !!!)

Aww hun, so sorry to hear this!! I hope it is resolved for you. I'm sure your surgeon is better equipped to answer that question than the nurse. If he expressly told you that it would be ok, then I'm sure it must be.
Maybe James would be able to give you an answer?
With regards to the money, you may have gone over your cooling off period, but you were acting on the express guidance of your surgeon. If the clinic change their mind, you should get every penny back because it is them saying that they cannot operate. Realistically, you wouldn't have paid them all of that money if they had told you they can't operate, so make sure you push the issue if they do decide it's not possible to go ahead!
Good luck hun

Aw you poor, poor thing! Dont feel bad about stressing out, everyone on here knows what a huge deal it is, and how awful it must be to hear this. But try not to worry yet. If the surgeon said it would be ok the chances are hes right and it is just this nurse who has got a bit above her station and made the call to you. Try your best not to let your fears run ahead of you, it might still be ok.
I really hope it works out for you xxxxx

Oh no that's terrible. I can't see you losing your money because to be honest it sounds like their mistake.
I don't know if I'm about to suggest something irrelevant but wouldn't it be better to get the annaethetists (sp?) opinion...as he she is the one in control of the ga and should probabl be more clues up on what the risk is....especially if the nurse suggests one thing and the surgeon suggests another.
I'm sorry your feeling so upset andi hope this all gets sorted really soon x

I think maybe they got a bit worried and acted before speaking to the surgeon. Hopefully the op will go ahead as planned. As for losing your money - You didn't cancel, they did. Your surgeon said to carry on taking the meds and the nurse feels differently. You wont lose your money
Re: cant believe what happened today ... :(
god i hope not dont mean to have a huge sob story but my oh paid for it with compensation he got after losing his legs in afghan so i am distraught at the thought that this will happen :( xx

Re: cant believe what happened today ... :(
Oh sweetheart, I can feel the pain in your words - but the other girls are 100% correct. If they cancel, you will get all your money back - there is no way legally that they can withhold even a single penny as it is they who have defaulted on the contract (as you informed them in advance of your existing medications and they agreed to go ahead on that basis).
The nurse should have checked with your surgeon before phoning you, That was extremely negligent on her part.
If they do in fact cancel, I would actually ask for more than you have actually paid them, saying that this has caused you undue anxiety and stress (worth trying anyway).
However, as your PS was quite happy at going ahead with the procedure I am sure that it will be OK and that tomorrow you will get a call from your PCC telling you everything will be fine

What upsetting news! I could feel your dissapointment in your words. It's kind of soul destroying when your dreams are shattered by a phone call like that! I know it sounds harsh and you feel your over reacting but when your getting something you have longed for and a silly nurse rings you up and puts a spanner in the works..........arrrrrggghhhhh!! I hope your PS over rules her and everything goes ahead as planned.
Fingers crossed for you hunnie we will get you there!!

Re: cant believe what happened today ... :(
OMG-I am crossing my fingers for you BIG time-and to hear how you paid for your BS, makes it that much more heartbreaking. What an AWESOME OH you have-Bless him-and say "thank you" from me, for his service please :) I have 2 cousins over there on their 2nd and 3rd tours-
It DOES sound like everything will be okay-in the meantime, have you tried Googling it? Just to keep your mind occupied while you wait-You may find similar stories-and it may make you feel secure in the meantime-I would have lost my mind if I got that phone call-I myself am on a med that doesn't do well with general anesthesia, (not Prednisone) and I cannot imagine getting that call ike that-OMG- :console:
I had a last minute scare, as I travelled 1000+ miles away for my surgery, and my SIL and 12 year old daughter were going with me, and we were staying for 5 days. I was flying out on my daughter's birthday, and thus taking her out for the day we got there site seeing, and to dinner etc. My SIL was coming to be my driver to and from surgery, and to spend the night with me as PS requires someone picks you up, and spends the next 24 hours with you. Three weeks before we were leaving, my SIL 4yr old son (Joshie my nephew) had a ruptured appendix, which then got infected, and then he had fevers. He didn't come home from hospital until 2 days before we were leaving..It was a roller-coaster, up and down, whether or not she could go, as she had 3 other small children at home her MIL was watching during Joshie's hospital stay, and she missed them etc etc.
So-finally the day before, she told me she just couldn't go. Another plane ticket would have been almost $1000 as it was 2 weeks before Christmas. So, I flew out and asked them at my pre-op if my daughter could be my 24 hour guardian (they call them "sitters"), and we could take a cab to and home from surgery. I explained that my SIL and daughter would both do the same thing if a complication arose-call PS or 911-Afterall SIL wasn't a nurse either.
They said No, because I needed someone to sign me out from surgery, agreeing to watch over me at hotel. I have a cousin (actually the wife of cousin in Afghanistan) at Fort Campell about 4 hours away-I called her and BEGGED-just to pick me up and my daughter would hang with me-But she couldn't get a sitter for the 8 hour round trip.
I literally started crying at the doctors office, and they felt SO bad, after all the $ I spent to travel out there. They were AWESOME about it-The nurse helped to find me a "sitting service" that elderly usually use-I paid $75 for a nurse to pick me up, drive me to hotel and give my daughter instructions-It all worked out in the end-and I was FINE the day of-actually sore as hell, but had pain meds, and my daughter and I ate good take-out and watched movies all day. -
Sorry to go on and on, about me-but I SO know how you feel-although different circumstances-I am crossing fingers-Keep me posted XX

My surgeon has written to my doctor (and sent me copy) after every consultation appointment, after op and after first check up - I thought this was standard, have you spoken to the doctor who prescribed your medication about the differing advice? Hope it all works out for you soon and like others have said you should not lose your money, it's not your fault. Sending you big hugs xx

Re: cant believe what happened today ... :(
Hi hun,
How upsetting for you. But I think you'll be ok. The surgeon is the one who willl surely ultimately decide whether it is safe to go ahead along with the anesthetist. The nurse was following protocol and really should of spoken to the surgeon before panicing you.
I know with that drug you have to wean yourself off of it. You probably still have time if you find out asap to stop it gradually before march but I don't think this needs to be the case.
Make an appointment and go back and speak with your surgeon asap. He knew of this drug you were on and was happy to operate. This is what matters.
Good luck xxxxxxxxxxxx

I reckon you'll be fine. If you are on about 5mg a day, the potential for immuno and adreno suppression is so low as to be negligible. If you are on 10mg a day or over you may need more time to get to a lower dose but hopefully not too long. You will still be able to have your op I am sure,
Good Luck - those boobies are coming your way!!

Hi there Kimmy Really hope you've had some good news today or some options at the very least. I can imagine how devasted that call must have made you feel - my original op date was cancelled as my surgeon had flu, I had a mini meltdown, but was able to reschedule for 2 weeks later. You must be feeling so much worse :console: This becomes such a huge focus for us so it's shattering when things go wrong, but everyone on here is here for you whatever the outcome xx

Re: cant believe what happened today ... :(
I think maybe the nurse was err-ing on the side of caution. You need to get medical advice from your surgery and if they conclude that it's OK, then get it in writing and give to the clinic.
It was 2 weeks from patient coordinator to operation for me.
I suffer with high blood pressure and am on a very lose dose of 2.5mg diruretic. On the evening of my consultation with the nurse, my pig of a boss wrongly had a go at me which upset me, so by the time the nurse took my blood pressure, it was so high, she said she wasn't going to record it. She told me that if my bp was that high, I wouldn't be able to have the operation, so she sought advice from somebody higher up who said I would have to have an ECG - which I did, the next day and was absolutely perfect - and so was my bp. The annoying thing is, I told her that it is non-specific hypertension and that stress or anxiety normally raise it.
The morning of my operation, it was sky-high again - which I knew it would be - and the nurse said the machine must be wrong (which made me chuckle). They didn't take it again and they went by my notes recording a good bp level.
If there are cases where medication has to be stopped 3 weeks before, then surely, the minimum time from seeing the surgeon or the nurse until the operation should be 3 weeks.
The other thing is - what if you had to have an emergency operation (heaven forbid) - what would happen then - would they say you can't have it for 3 weeks?
I think you'll be fine. Let us have an update when you can. xx
