Re: Norethisterone
I've just looked it up hun and it seems to be a hormone replacement.
One of the side effects is possible weight gain, but to be honest hun, if your having problems and in need of the replacement then surely getting well is your priority.
I do understand though sweetness, I'm taking prednisolone at the moment and have some dreadful side effects, but if they do their job... well, I can't complain.
Hope the meds make you feel better hunni

Re: Norethisterone
Ahhhh I see, I had my period on the day of my op too but it didn't bother me, I just had to wear a sanitary towel into theatre (they won't allow you to use a tampon) and all was fine.
I can't really see that you'll have a problem as it's only for short term use, but if you're really worried about taking it, you could consider just having your period as normal, I really didn't find it a problem sweetness. xx

Re: Norethisterone
Think I'll take it for op as nurse says too and my periods are heavy so don't want to wake up from op to that! x

Re: Norethisterone
I was due on the day before my op and knew that meant the heaviest day would be the day of my op. I got some from my Dr but then just before taking it, I asked James McDiarmid whether to take it or not.
He said not to, that the nurses were very able and used to coping with that sort of thing. He said the less meds you can take b4, the better. And this is an artificial hormone so has similar potential side effects to the pill.
In the end I ddin't take it and actually being on, heavy too here, wasn't a prob at all. Much more managable than I thought.

Re: Norethisterone
I took norethisterone for years hunni - I've always had period problems and no form of the pill has EVER worked for me... even tried injections and just disaster. I used to bleed constantly (not loads, just there all the time) norethisterone worked really well for me personally - didn't cause me to put on weight like the pill had. I stopped when I was trying to fall pregnant and have changed over to the mirena coil last year after the birth of my twins. Having the coil fitted is one of the best things I've ever done - right up there with wedding day, babies and new boobies! LOL
Give me a shout if you want any more info.

Re: Norethisterone
I have the mirena coil too due to my heavy periods, unfortunately mine haven't stopped, they are a little lighter though (they were 'really' bad before) so it has helped, but I still have heavy periods in comparisson to others. xx
Re: Norethisterone
I have the normal coil(not the mirena one) and I wish I had the mirena one. The nurse said to me for our wedding as I'm due on my period on our wedding day I could take a mini pill ( is this the same as norethisterone??) which I don't like the idea of as I put on loads of weight with the pill years ago and the last thing I want on my wedding day is to feel all fat and frumpy :-(
Can you ask for the mirena coil or do you have to have heavy periods to be put on it?
p.s sorry to divert from your original question x

Re: Norethisterone
You can ask for the mirena coil just as a contraceptive

Re: Norethisterone
mini pill made me pile on the weight and I swear it even broadened my hips a bit - hated taking it. I went to see my doc after having the twins to discuss contraception rather than period problems at that stage. Mirena coil was an option and I decided to try it. I had it fitted in June last year and I haven't bled since. It stops you from building up a lining, so nothing to come out. Did take a good 6 weeks to settle down tho - bled off and on a little at first.

Re: Norethisterone
oh also just to add - norethisterone is not a contraceptive, and you can still fall pregnant when taking it.

This is exactly why I don't want it she looked at me like I was crazy and said you won't put on any weight in a couple of days but I know otherwise. I've been waiting for my big day for 19mths I'm taking nothing to chance!
so Minxie how are feeling on the norethisterone or did you decide not to take it?

I took it for years hun - I have PCOS and was using it to regulate my periods as they were really erratic and sometimes non-existant. I never had any probs with it. I stopped before trying to fall pregnant, but opted for the coil afterwards as contraception - it's been great, so no need fore norethisterone any more - all is fantastic :)
