1) How will breast implants look over time? Will they sag?

Breast implants are much more resistant to sag than your own breast tissue.  If you had a small amount of natural breast tissue to begin with you will most likely never have to worry about sag.  If you have a significant amount of natural breast tissue your breasts will sag with age just as they would if the implant was not there.

2) How long is recovery after breast augmentation?

This really varies patient to patient, however, there are several factors to consider.  There is less discomfort if the implant is placed above the muscle.  If the implant is placed under the muscle most discomfort is experienced during the first 48-72 hours but will decrease quickly after this time period.  Bigger implants can also cause pain to last longer.  If you have a sedentary job it may be possible for you to work after 5 days but it is important to keep movement minimal and to not lift anything that exceeds 5lbs.  If you have a highly active job that requires a significant amount of movement and lifting you will need to take at least 3 weeks off of work.

3) Do breast implants cause stretch marks?

Usually breast implants do not cause stretch marks, however, if you choose large implants and have poor quality skin stretch marks are a possibility.  Massaging the breast area with Vitamin E twice a day in the weeks prior to surgery as well as following surgery may help to reduce the chances of developing stretch marks.  Be sure to consult with Dr. Swier as to when you can start Vitamin E treatment following surgery.

4) Do breast implants interfere with mammograms?

Breast implants do not necessarily interfere with mammograms.  Occasionally, more x-rays are needed if you have had breast augmentation in order to see around the implant.  If you have a strong family history of breast cancer and/or significant fibrocystic disease is important to remember to mention this during your consultation.  It should be pointed out that breast augmentation does not increase your likelihood for breast cancer.

5) What are the differences between saline and silicone implants?

  • The gel-like feel of silicone feels more like natural breast tissue as opposed to the fluid-like feel of saline.
  • Silicone gel is less likely to ripple than saline.
  • Sixty per cent of the human body is made of saline so if these implants rupture the fluid just gets flushed out of the body.  If silicone implants rupture the get remains in the body and can be hard to remove.  However, there are silicone implants that are made of a cohesive gel.  If cohesive gel implants rupture the silicone does not leak from the implant into the body and is not a health risk.
  • The incision to put silicone implants in is slightly longer than that of saline.  This is because saline implants are filled after they are placed into the body and silicone implants are placed into the body already filled.

About Number 3, im prone to stretch marks :(
I was planning on using either palmers or bio oil in the run up before my BA...do you think this will be enough or I should use Vit E aswell? I guess there are vit E body creams out there?

What you're using is fine Jennifer. Here in the UK you're advised not to use ANY vitamin supplements on the run up your BA. So you wouldn't be able to use the Vit E anyway. Xx
