Tattoos cause Capsular Contraction

Post by jellytot on 5th October 2010, 9:22 am

I just thougt you might want to know that my surgeon has just told me that after a ba you SHOULD NOT have any tattoos as there is a direct correlation between getting a tattoo (post op) and capsular contraction!

He told me that he had refused one lady replacement surgery (that he would normally have offered) as she had gone and had an armfull of tattoos post op against his direct warnings about it!

I've read about this somewhere but apparently nothing has been proven. xx

Just found this quote from an american ASAPS surgeon -

there are some other concerns that have been raised about tattoos and breast implants. First make sure you go to a reputable artist who uses not only sterile needles but individually distributed paigments. Another concern is that hardening of the implants (capsular contracture) is caused by a low grade bacterial presence (biofilm). There is some anectdoal eveidence to suggest that a tattoo can result in spreading of bacteria through the bloodstream where they settle on the implant. For the most part this is theoretical but I bring it up for the sake of completeness.

Sounds like a pretty low risk thing to me (although I'm not keen on tattoos so it doesn't really affect me!) Thanks for the quote Cookie thumbs up

I'd be furious if he were my surgeon! Unless he had proof that the tattoos were a direct cause of CC which he doesn't then he was very wrong IMO to have refused the poor woman replacement surgery. xx

I have not heard of this exactly but I have heard you should tell your dentist you have had a BA before any dental treatment so they can put you on antibiotics because they think bacteria could get in and trigger capsular contracture - I guess this is the same sort of thing. No idea is it is proven or not but its worth being careful x

Yes, it was part of the same thing that he was explaining to me! He's going to photocopy his notes and send them to me, so when I read it again, I'll let you all know!

I've not heard this before. Think I'd just tell the surgeon the tattoos have always been there as there is no direct proof. I do know that you are not allowed to give blood for 4 months to a year after having a tattoo, piercing or acupuncture as there is a risk of infection, but the same goes for any operation you may have. So would they also be contributed to CC.

What about if you were going to have a tattoo removed? I have one on my shoulder which i'm going to have removed by laser treatment, do you think this would have the same effect?

I was even considering a tattoo on my one of my boobs (when I get some), think I have gone off that idea.

My husband just had his first tattoo last week and suggested I get "Pinky" and "Perky" tattoos on my boobs (for those of you who don't know - they are cartoon character Pigs from a childhood a long time ago!) I said I hoped they both would be perky!
