How long after my op can I go out and walk my dog?
I have a doggie that loves a lot of walkies. I know that taking her out on the lead would not be possible for some time, in case she pulls, but you think I can go out for a walk the day after the op?
5 days to go, so excited now it hurts
eek

I'd say you'll need to find someone else to walk her the first few days to a week- just in case she pulls or runs off- I could push a buggy at 3 days post op but it wasn't comfortable and my daughters nursery is only a 4 minute walk away! x

I've 3 dogs and waited 2 wks. even then i had someone with me. i only walked the small dog and after a while i felt pulling on my chest and although it wasn't painful i let my friend take over as i didnt want to jeopardise my new boobies!! Everyone heals differently so go at your own pace but make sure you've someone with you just in case... xx

i've got 2 yorkies, and i waited 2 weeks before walking them....you certainly won't feel like walking them the day after the op,believe me!! best to wait hun, and go with someone the first time you walk him, so they can take over if he pulls xx

Hey hunni
I managed to walk from the day after my op - not far and not very fast, but I do think it helped my recovery. I built up the distance each day.
You're right that you won't be able to take the dog on the lead, but if she/he walks to heel, you should be fine - just take it easy and don't go too far or fast to begin with.

Re: How long after my op can I go out and walk my dog?
I have two labradors, they are really well trained though as they are working dogs not pets. They never go on a lead with me and if they had to I wouldn't risk it - the idea of even them stopping for a wee and pulling my arm backwards is enough to rule it out!!
However, I have been taking them for mile/two mile walks every day since two days post op.(I usually walk for at least four miles a day though so I have cut it down a lot for me) Even just doing this though I have found it has really helped me to rest properly because I am physically tired when I get home.
And another thing, don't throw a stick or ball like I tried to earlier!! It was the worlds most femal throw ever and thankfully I stopped before I really hurt myself - if anyone had been around they would have laughed lots!!
Your new boobies are just around the corner!!

I walked my dog a few days after surgery. I tied the lead around my waste so was no problem even if she pulled!

MeMe, not going to risk it. Will have to wait for hubby or ask my in-laws to help. Anything could happen and I may not be able to cope with the situation. It is not worth it. But I am glad it worked for you. Thanks for your text. Appreciated.

Yeah its definitely better to be on the safe side! I went out with my dog because I had an extremely easy recovery and am one of those people that just can't sit still. So after about 5 days of doing nothing I got so agitated that I just had to get out. My doggie is really well behaved as well and doesn't really pull at all and the little pulls she does every now and then were easily managed with the lead around the waste. But sure this wouldn't work for anybody. Was just my own experience :)

I hear you MeMe. I too have itchy feet & ants in the pants combined. My doggie is well behaved too, but have to cross quite a busy road to the dene. The lead around the waste is brill idea though. Will be easier and safer for her if she is tied around my waist when running with her again( not until August for me). Hmm, an idea worth gold x

I too am desperate to get out walking with the doggies again.I have developed a serious house belly which i need to get rid of hope starting walking will do the trick.
Think i will build up my walking couple of miles over the next few weeks before attempting my normal walks. For now it is left to my hubby bless him.....and the hoovering and ironing welcome to our world.

The belly problem is inevitable and imminent. I have given into it, but my husband and house work? He is actually quite good when he puts his mind to it, I think, trying to remember .... Hmmmmmmm? There may be some serious supervising done on my part. :-)

Re: How long after my op can I go out and walk my dog?
I have two cockers Ellie, so know the energy they have and the need for excercise, it would have been impossible for me to have walked them for the first two weeks post-op though.
When I could get someone else to walk them they got their walks and when I couldn't they had to make do with the garden... as boisterous as they are, they coped well and so did I with getting up feeding them and letting them out...
As long as your dog has access to garden she'll be OK hun, she can get back to her normal routine just as soon as you're able xx
