Breast Augmentation on the NHS
Hi,
I am new to the forum. I am currently doing some research on breast augmentations on the NHS. It would be great to speak to those of you who have experience in that area.
Please let me know if you are happy to chat (completely confidentially).
Best,
Silke

Hi!!
Perhaps if you provided some more details i.e. who are you doing the research for? why? it's purpose and funding etc. You may find those willing to chat. General background on yourself, and reason you have choosen here to seek respondents.
I am sure you will understand that this is a very personal area in peoples lives that you are hoping to share without needed information.

Re: Breast Augmentation on the NHS
Hi,
Sorry I didn't provide much information! I'm happy to give more though.
I work for North One Television, a BAFTA and Royal Television Society award winning production company who specialise in intelligent, innovative and compelling documentaries. Our two most recent documentaries have been Medic One, about London’s Air Ambulance on BBC1 and Teenagers Fighting Cancer on Channel 4.
The research I'm currently doing on breast plastic surgery is to find out about people's experiences and how they managed to get this surgery on the NHS. The information provided will educate the possibility of developing a documentary on the subject. None of the information will be published and will be kept completely confidental.
I hope this helps. Please feel free to contact me for any further information.
Many thanks and best wishes,
Silke

Re: Breast Augmentation on the NHS
I think what you're looking for are some "Wow I got my boob job on the NHS" stories, unfortunately the NHS does not hand out boob jobs there are very specific guidelines and strict procedures to stick to, and my only thought here is that your actions will further complicate the agony that some ladies have to go through when appraching their GP's about this and ultimately lead to further tightening of NHS guidelines in this area.

I agree Sticky!!! Also as they are reading through the site... as they have been.... for long periods of time, more than once...seems very underhand and lacks feeling for others and their situations. agreement and permission should be sought, confidentiality and professionalism seems to be lacking.
I would think, you may well be on the wrong track for any tastefull and truthfull research or outcome.

Re: Breast Augmentation on the NHS
As Sticky correctly mentions, the NHS has very specific guidelines when it comes to breast surgery. What I'm trying to determine is whether people feel that these guidelines work and what their experiences have been about the processes of getting breast surgery, whatever the reasons may have been for them - tubular breasts, no breast tissue, size difference.
Mia - I'm not trying to pry, or do anything underhand. I am trying to find people who would like to talk to me. If that is noone, so be it! All I can do is ask!
I'd like to point out that all I'm trying to establish is a) whether there are lots of young women who are seeking breast surgery on the NHS and b) what their reasons are for doing so and c) what their experiences are, i.e. whether their requests have been dealt with and in what way. I am not trying to find stories, but merely trying to get a sense of how many people are in this situation.
And what seemed to be Sticky's main worry - I certainly don't have any influence over the tightening of NHS rules!

Re: Breast Augmentation on the NHS
There are a few girls on here and other forums who have had breast surgery on the NHS but not many and most had asymmetry. Are you doing a dissertation of some sort?
Re: Breast Augmentation on the NHS
I'm not nads - I am doing background research for a documentary about young people and the NHS. I'm currently working on finding out about young people and requests for plastic surgery on the NHS.

Re: Breast Augmentation on the NHS
Ah ok. Personally I had no breast tissue and a lot of friends and family said try the NHS first but I heard you would have to wait years and see therapists first for ages and maybe go on meds so that put me off, plus I didnt want to discuss it with my GP. I can understand girls with asymmetry/tuberous breasts and other deformities getting it done on the nhs and i know the nhs dont hand out boob jobs willy nilly

Re: Breast Augmentation on the NHS
Ive heard of girls in the past 1 or 2 who have very easily had surgery on the nhs due to depression however i do believe these rules have been tightened now because of all the media hype, even with that it is still a very lengthy process a old friend of my mums who had serious mental issues about her breasts had to go through 2 years of tests and seeing a therapist before she could have the op.

Let me assure you that my concern is not that you may somehow have magical ability to dictate clinical policy for the NHS
My concern is that the ultimate outcome of your research will be as ever, an entirely skewed view of breast augmentation. As Nads has pointed out girls here who may have had BA provided by the NHS are those who are unfortunate enough to have breast asymmetry.
And you're right Mia it does seem peculiar that I received a PM from a member who hasn't posted directly on the site a little while ago asking if I could help find PCT guidelines on breast augmentation in their area............then tada! we have a researcher asking for NHS boob job stories!!! very, very
And as you may have gathered, to quote Dragon's Den one of my favourite tv programmes.............. I'm Out!

Re: Breast Augmentation on the NHS
Yes i hope it will be a fair view on BAs on the NHS because some girls have terribly depressing disorders that no one can claim to understand, unless they've had it. Some have no breast tissue and nobody with natural breasts can say its a waste of nhs money when they dont know how awful it is not to develop any breasts. It would be nice to have a more positive documentary on breast augmentations as 99% are negative sadlyMy concern is that the ultimate outcome of your research will be as ever, an entirely skewed view of breast augmentation
Re: Breast Augmentation on the NHS
There are very few girls who manage to get augmentations on the NHS. I myself tried this approach at first as I suffered with depression due to feeling like a boy, or a small child. My GP told me to not even wast my time, and to call the Samaritans if I needed help. Not ideal, but in retrospect I know that had I tried to carry on via the NHS I wouldn't have had surgery by now.
The fact is most people don't have surgery on the NHS as easy as the media would have you believe. I know that it's more likely you can have a gastric band or ear pinning than breast implant surgery.
Good luck if you find anyone, I don't think there's anyone on here who's gone through the NHS route, but you may find someone to help.

Not sure whether you are saying that I am the same person as the member who asked for PCT guidelines? I can assure you I am not.

Why ever would you assume that? I still have the PM in question and the username does not match yours, although why you would so vociferously defend an allegation that was never made remains a mystery.......
The lady doth protest too much, methinks.

Re: Breast Augmentation on the NHS
I am not "defending an allegation so vociferously", nor is there much of a mystery.
I was merely working out what you were trying to say in your slightly cryptic message. It read like you were trying to suggest a connection between my message and the message you received from someone asking about PCT guidelines and all I did was explain that it wasn't me. I am not sure why you think it would be and why you think I'd want to deny it. All very odd.
In any case, thanks to all of you for your responses.
