How long after BA did you drive?

Post by daisychain15 on 16th February 2016, 9:02 am

Good morning!

I still have the rest of the week off work and seeing my surgeon Weds for follow up and to take my tape off! All is still fine and my recovery has been really good thankfully, but I just wondered how long after surgery did you drive? My surgeon didn't say but he is really chilled so I think he wouldn't mind me driving now its been 11 days but just wanted your opinions!

Thanks xxx

Daisy Chain you are looking FAB!!

I was told 2 weeks but as I had a terrible recovery I left it almost 3 weeks as I wouldn't have felt comfortable before then.  Some are told a week but I guess if your movement isn't restricted then you'll be fine.  I had a little test drive around the block before doing any long journeys and it was fine.  Seatbelt just chaffed the sensitive skin on my boob but other than that no discomfort!

Its great getting the tapes off - I had to wait 3 weeks to get the tapes off as I had my BA just before Xmas. xx

I drove after 6 days and felt fine. But like Lucy says it all depends on how your movement is. Just try not to push yourself. Xx

I was driving after 2 weeks. The driving itself was not a problem, but putting the car in reverse gear was a challenge. Also, just be aware that if you break hard you will push your weight back with your arms (hope that makes sense) and take sleeping policemen carefully too (though I guess that's the idea of them) x

I drove after a week to go for my one week checkup. I don't no how I did it, I was in so much pain. I didn't drive for about 3 weeks after that. Xx

Legally it's 48hrs after the GA, and you have to be able to perform an emergency stop. Other than that, I think you'll be ok now. I left it 3 weeks, but only because I didn't have to drive until then.

I was back to work after a week so had to drive, I just took it carefully.  I could not open the boot of the car without severe pain :(

I drove 100 miles (50 each way) on Sunday which was day 13 after my op. After driving on bumpy country roads for 15 minutes I was in tears with the pain, I thought once I got on the motorway it would be fine but it was AGONY! The bumps in the road and trying to keep the wheel straight and turn the wheel round corners and roundabouts- even indicating - (I drive a heavy 4x4) was so, so painful. I've been in pain for the 2 days since and I really regret it. But the only way my partner gets to see his kids is if I drive him and because of my op he hadn't seen them for 2 weeks. I felt like I HAD to get him there. It was hell. I think my boobies are ok, but they hurt a lot since then.

I drove after 10 days, I probably could have at 7 days. Reverse gear was harder than the rest and I couldn't stretch to close the boot but found ways. Xx
