Been to see the surgeon! long winded :-) Empty Been to see the surgeon! long winded :-)

Post by mrs mac 12th September 2013, 6:36 pm

Hi Ladies
So a quick update since my appointment with the surgeon on Tue 10/9.
You might remember I was particularly nervous about seeing the surgeon because he had treated our little girl 7 years ago for a birthmark she had on her nose and I never found him very approachable or easy to talk too. Anyway, I’m glad to say, when we met – he didn’t appear to remember me but I felt strangely at ease –almost as though he was a welcome familiar face amidst this stressful journey – weird huh!

After reading my file etc, he said his job was to ensure, following the psychiatrists report, that there were no contraindications. Hmm, not sure what that meant exactly but I’m surmising he meant – he was there to physically examine me to ensure the psychological di-stress was matched with physical state – if that makes sense….

He asked me a few medical history questions and then said to go behind the screen, take of my top half clothing and pop one of the gowns on – didn’t take my height of weight? He quickly examined me, at which point I have to admit I was in tears like a blubbering idiot as I felt so embarrassed. He took measurements and that was it, all over in a few minutes. The little nurse that was there gave me some tissues – not sure she knew what else to do with me – when I think back now …. Eeek L

Afterwards he asked what I knew of breast surgery, I explained what I had read / seen on tv etc. He then explained all about the mechanics of the surgery, the risks etc etc. He said if he were doing my surgery he would put a round cohesive gel implant under the muscle as there is not a lot of breast tissue there and I’m quite slim on top – so you don’t see the implant (with incision points under the natural crease of the breast). I asked a few questions etc etc. At the end of the meeting I said, well what do you think? As in – do you think this will be approved. All he said was “well I think it’s a reasonable request” and that he’d write back to the psychiatrist who would want to see me again. I mentioned during my meeting with the psychiatrist and she was referring me to the surgeon - she said she didn’t require to see me back again – that she would support the decision – either way – of the surgeon?? Mind you I don’t suppose it makes much difference in the long run. He also mentioned the surgery waiting list was approx. 3 months. So, to be honest – I still feel in limbo – no firm yes – but no firm no either?! Another waiting game I guess. One think I wish I had asked was what kind of sizing he would use IF it was approved. Only thing that was mentioned like that was when he said he wouldn’t use too big an implant as it wouldn’t suit my frame and would look ridiculous – comedy boobs are not what I’m looking for anyway lol!

So to those girls who have been fortunate enough to get approval in Scotland from the NHS – what’s your thoughts? And when did you get to discuss sizing etc.

Keeping everything crossed – this waiting game is so stressful, trying to not let it consume my life – mind you with a 7 and 2 year old and a hyper hubby – there’s probably not much chance of that ha ha.

xx

Glad your appointment went well.

I don't think us nhs girls get choice of size. They just put what they feel is right for your body. As they aren't about enhancing but sorting x
