BAAPS surgeons now offer 2 years insurance.

Post by COOKIE on 12th June 2013, 6:34 pm

Up until now insurance for aesthetic procedures hasn't been possible. But now with the help of BAAPS its finally here! Stars

My all time fav surgeon Douglas McGeorge led the project and as you can read in the press release, this is groundbreaking news and WONDERFUL to have that additional 2 year saftey net!

Press release:

London – 29 April, 2013 – In the wake of the findings from the Government enquiry into cosmetic surgery published in the last week, the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons ([You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]) is first to announce the implementation of one of the report’s major recommendations: for patients to be protected through insurance. The only aesthetic surgical society to conduct a yearly audit of the procedures performed by its members, the BAAPS – which represents the vast majority of NHS plastic surgeons in private practice – was able to work with the world’s leading specialist insurance market, Lloyd’s of London, to create a policy that will safeguard all patients of surgeons who are part of the Association.

The ‘Aesthetic Surgery Commitment’ or ‘ASC’ policy ([You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]) is groundbreaking in that not only does it cover corrective treatment of all the most common complications of surgery (such as infection or bleeding) but also – a world first – capsular contracture, an abnormal reaction of the body to breast implants. Up to one in ten women who’ve undergone breast augmentation may develop this condition, but historically would have had to pay for corrective surgery themselves.

According to consultant plastic surgeon and BAAPS President Rajiv Grover;

“In line with Sir Bruce Keogh’s recommendations for more safeguards in the aesthetic surgery sector, we are pleased to launch a truly innovative insurance package that will further protect our patients. No procedure is risk-free and ASC covers all common complications, so people undergoing surgery with BAAPS members can enjoy peace of mind that they will be looked after, in the unlikely event of any problems.”

All the most popular surgical procedures are included, including tummy tucks, eyelid surgery, arm lifts, breast augmentation, ‘moob’ reduction (gynaecomastia), liposuction, facelifts, pinning back ears and fat grafting, among others. The more common complications such as infection, haematoma (bleeding), seroma (build-up of fluid), nerve injury and others are all covered. Many of the conditions can develop a month or longer after the procedure is undertaken – and in the case of capsular contracture, it could be several months - so the policy automatically activates on the twenty-ninth day after the op and remains live for two years, as during that initial period hospitals would cover any complications.

According to consultant plastic surgeon and former BAAPS President Douglas McGeorge, who led the project;

“At the BAAPS we are in the unique position of having at our disposal over ten years of reliable data, so we’ve been able to work with the world’s leading specialist insurers to design a solid product that will protect patients from being left out of pocket should a complication occur after their hospital cover runs out. We’re delighted to be able to cover the costs of corrective surgery even for conditions such as capsular contracture, which has never been done before.”

It is the surgeon rather than the patient who is billed, but pricing starts as little as £50 for procedures up to the value of £2,000 and cover on a sliding scale is available for surgery worth up to £12,000. Higher cover can be quoted for.

According to consultant plastic surgeon (and also) former President of the BAAPS Nigel Mercer, who worked on developing the policy;

“We’re proud to have been working over the last year to help design a tailor-made policy based on comprehensive data and sound statistical analysis. Not only does this product directly address the issues highlighted by the Government’s review but it is also ready to be fully implemented. During these turbulent times in our sector, patients deserve a formal commitment.”

interesting read!
so it is the surgeon (BAAPS only) that is covered, unfortunately as a patient it is still not possible to take out insurance for this purpose, but its a massive step in the right direction, really good x

The insurance covers the BAAPS surgeon.

So... If up you have surgery with a BAAPS surgeon then you will effectively gain an additional 2 years cover for a fee that will be included in your package cost. (I'd advise you ask about this to ensure you've got it)

This is such a breakthrough for BAAPS surgeons who find it hard to compete with the large aftercare offered by the big commercial clinics, so lets say you have surgery with Spire.... They offer a years aftercare, well now, with this insurance, you'll then have 3 years because of the additional 2 years that starts 'after' your aftercare policy runs out will then be covered for free by your surgeon.

The same for MyBreast ladies... They currently I think offer 5 years... So now, they'll have that saftey net for 7!

I believe this is just the start of things to come though and it won't be long before insurers too cotton onto this and offer it for patients of other surgeons too. Xx

I think this is a great idea because it can be a negative as like you said, they cannot compete with the aftercare that other clinics offer. I will ask when i have my consultation next month if this will be included.
Its great as it really opens up more options x

Not that I'm aware of yet Lisa... But as happens with anything. Once one starts, the others are soon to follow, so maybe in the near future this will be a big possibility for all. Xx

thats interesting vix, so you can get your own insurance cover for this? i thought it is just the surgeons that are covered.

i contacted the insurance company to ask if trainee BAAPS members (full membership pending) were also covered by the scheme.
a lady replied really promptly and said i had put forward a very interesting question that she had relayed to the BAAPS council and would get back to me as soon as she could.

You'll contact your surgeon, or clinic and ask them how much the fee is for the insurance cover. They'll give you a quote as has happened with Vix and depending whether or not you feel its worth it, then you can pay the additional cost to have the surgeon cover the work they do for you. Xx

thanks for clarifying cookie!

depending on if my surgeon is covered as a trainee BAAPS member, i will definitely enquire about the insurance!
if it is £200 as in vix case, that would definitely be worth it for me x
